My Favorite Consignment Shops

This column actually needs a subtitle because this is all about my favorite consignment shops on the North Shore of Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. But that was obviously a little long.

There are tons of amazing consignment shops in Boston and New York and I’ll have to do a post on those later. However I wanted to narrow things down a bit. So, as I said, here are my favorite consignment shops on the North Shore of Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire …

Best for Designer Duds

Madame Had’em

With locations in posh Marblehead and Manchester-by-the-Sea, it’s now wonder why Madame Had’em wins my approval for best designer duds. I wrote about my most recent trip to their Marblehead location last week. They have everything from some of the nicer mall brands to designers like Christian Louboutin, Burberry and even Hermes. And everything is priced to sell. As I was looking around, one fellow customer snagged a Versace frock for $10 because it had been in stock for a while and the zipper was broken. What impresses me is how everything is in such great condition and the array of sizes available for the taking. It is a veritable treasure trove!

Best for Handbags and Jewelry

I have no clue where they are getting their stuff but J’Adore in Wakefield consistently has the most beautiful handbags and jewelry from Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent and Burberry. I found a pair of Chanel double “C” pearl earrings for a steal. And when we walk by (it is conveniently located around the corner from my home) my husband has to physically move me past their impressive window displays. Right now I have my eye on a particularly beautiful Louis Vuitton miniature steamer trunk. Hey, my birthday is coming up!

Best for Real Vintage

Modern Millie

Modern Millie

I’ve been going to Modern Millie‘s in Salem since I was a goth-obsessed teenager. And though it has gotten more and more brand new rockabilly clothing in year by year, you’ll still find a unique piece on their shelves. I have a gorgeous houndstooth winter coat that has been mistaken for vintage Dior more than once, a vintage, a handmade floral dress and several pill box hats from the 1960s. During my latest visit I picked up a box purse that has been decoupaged with a vintage map from the 1950s. I have been using it as a decoration in my living room because I can’t bring myself to use it for fear of injuring the beautiful detail.

Best Deals

Wear House

I had always loved stopping into 2nd Time Around in Portsmouth, NH when I would go north. But with all of 2TAs store closings, I had been left with a hole in my consignment little black book. That is until I stumbled upon Wear House. It’s a small little shop but it’s packed with amazing finds at some even more amazing prices. I brought home a Kate Spade hobo bag for under $60 and a Forever21 tee. But my favorite deal of the day was a Nanette Lepore dress, skirt and matching jacket. All three pieces are the same woolen design. The skirt and jacket were sold as a set but the dress was sold separately … so naturally I bought both. I figure this winter I can wear the jacket with the dress or the skirt and I’ll be best dressed at the office. And I got all three pieces for under $120!

So what are some of your favorite consignment shops? I am always on the lookout for deals!
