Arielle’s First Birthday

Boston, MA

How to Throw a Mermaid-Themed First Birthday Party

I think I started planning Arielle’s mermaid-themed First Birthday Party before she was even born. Alex and I would joke that on the invitations we’d include, “Shhhh! It’s a Surprise!” As if you can surprise a one year old.

But the joke was on us in the end. While I kept planning her party, the world had another kind of plan and life, as we knew it, shut down. Finally at the end of April we called it. There would be no traditional Birthday Party for Arielle this year.

Now obviously, in the grand scheme of things, a First Birthday Party is nothing compared to the loss of life that has taken place over the past few months. I’m just sharing the party that would have been had we been able to have it as well as how we decided to celebrate our little girl’s first year in a safe way while still involving family and friends.

A Birthday Caravan

I am a huge believer in birthdays, so in lieu of a party we planned a Birthday Caravan.

We began early on May 27th at my sister and brother-in-law’s house for a morning of cake. They had already given her tons of presents the weekend before so it was a nice time that we could just spend together. It was a Wednesday and Alex had to work so the rest of the day we spent reading Arielle’s favorite books and watching her favorite movies. After lunch my mom gave Arielle her gifts, a beautiful Princess Tea Set amongst other things. Then we headed to Nunny’s for a small birthday gathering out on the porch. Arielle just loves spending time with her great grandmother! After that we finished out the day at my in-laws where we had cupcakes out on the lawn and they gave her a convertible tricycle and matching helmet.

It turned out to be a very successful and fun day. But since I had already gathered most of the supplies and decorations, I decided to put together a peek at the party that would have been for our little Birthday Queen.

I spent a good portion of the Memorial Day Weekend assembling a three layer, tri-color cake, covered in fondant mermaid scales. I crushed butter cookies over the top to create a sandy beach and sprayed sugar shells with pearl food coloring. When you cut into the cake, mermaid sprinkles were hidden in the middle.

But the showstopper was this incredible cold porcelain cake topper that my mom got on Etsy. I picked up a glass dome at IKEA to keep it safe and it’s on display in Arielle’s room. It’s a great keepsake.

Since we were taking this show on the road, I also made cupcakes for everyone we visited. With special cupcake holders and mermaid picks, they came out just as pretty as the cake I had spent so much time on! And a party isn’t a party without food and drinks. I used a large shell cookie cutter to make “shell sandwiches” in some of Arielle’s favorite combinations: cucumber and cream cheese, lox and cream cheese, and peanut butter. Displaying them on these scalloped cake stands made everything look particularly beachy. Drinks were served in a seashell punch bowl which has become my new favorite party decoration.

I found the cutest plates and napkins (linked to alternatives since the set I bought is no longer available) and some sparkly cups and “dinglehoppers” (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, why are you even throwing a mermaid-themed birthday party?). I am in love with this blush sequin tablecloth but to make it a bit more on-theme, I threw on some netting which you can find on Amazon or at any craft store. I bought this ombre mermaid scale backdrop and the cutest “Happy Birthday” sign online. I then wrapped her gifts in mermaid scale wrapping paper and ribbon.

Of course, the birthday girl had to have a special outfit, crown and a tutu for her high chair!

After all of this work, Arielle was thrilled with her mermaid-themed First Birthday Party. And it’s a good thing because if we’re lucky, we’ll be using these decorations for her second birthday party next year.

You can check out more of Arielle’s Adventures over on my Instagram. And if you have any ideas on how I can add to this spread for next year, please let me know in the comments.

What it’s Like to Have a Miscarriage

Thank you to the team at Long Hill for hosting us!

A very important heads-up for my fellow mamas before you go: carriages and strollers are not allowed on the trails this year. Definitely plan to babywear or make sure your little ones have on their best walking shoes for the trek. 👟👻

Just taking in the view with my favorite little feline. We may have our backs to the camera, but I promise looking down at Aurora in her little October cat dress is the only view I really need anyway. Equal parts festive magic and everyday motherhood, wrapped up in the ultimate New England tradition.

Tell me—what is your absolute, non-negotiable fall photo op? 👇🥂

Even locals have rules about Salem in October—most Even locals have rules about Salem in October—mostly, stay far away and let the visitors have their moment.

But when @DisneyAnimation invites you to check out their Hexed booth on the Salem Common? Well, even the most dedicated homebodies make an exception. And honestly? I am so glad we did.

There is nothing quite like an early Saturday morning stroll through this city when the crisp autumn air hits just right. We loved checking out the festive storefronts (shoutout to the spooky Dunks, though a little reminder to please support our incredible local indie cafes too—we have so many fabulous small businesses serving up life-changing pastries and local roast right here!).

We popped over to the Salem Common to experience the Hexed booth celebrating the upcoming release of this bewitching new Disney film, and it brought all the cozy, cinematic magic to our weekend.

Sometimes breaking your own rules pays off in gold (and a little bit of cinematic sparkle).

Welcome back to another edition of Kate’s Take! Tucked right inside the charming galleries of the @wenhammuseum lives this permanent, three-foot-tall gothic masterpiece—and it is pure magic.

Lovingly handcrafted over eight years by the late Mrs. Mary Hinckley, this miniature Victorian mansion is an homage to Charles Addams’ iconic cartoons and the beloved 1960s TV series. Every parlor and winding hallway is dripping with macabre details—from Morticia and Gomez lounging in velvet chairs to Uncle Fester, Wednesday, and yes… even Thing lending a helping hand. 🖐️🖤

Skip the madness of crowded tourist streets and step into vintage, spooky nostalgia that’s perfect for both collectors and little dreamers alike.

Have you spotted this North Shore secret yet? Let me know in the comments, and don’t forget to save this for your October weekend itinerary!

Until next time, I am Fashionably Yours,

Come, we fly! Straight to Salem, of course. ✨ Sli Come, we fly! Straight to Salem, of course. ✨

Slipping on my chicest boots (and maybe a witch hat, for good measure) to run amok, amok, amok through the most iconic Hocus Pocus filming locations. There’s nothing like seeing the magic of your favorite Halloween movie come to life right here in my own backyard.

Ready to light the Black Flame Candle? Here’s where to find the magic:

🖤 The Ropes Mansion (Allison’s House) // 318 Essex St.
Still waiting on my invitation to the party at the chicest house in town. A girl can dream, can’t she? This colonial mansion is pure Salem glam.

💃 Old Town Hall (The Town Hall Party) // 32 Derby Sq.
You can practically hear Bette Midler casting a spell on the entire town. The site of the most legendary Halloween party in cinematic history. No contest.

🌳 Salem Common (Outdoor Scenes) // North Washington Sq.
The perfect spot for a crisp autumn stroll, plotting how to steal a spellbook from a trio of 17th-century witches. You know, a totally normal Tuesday.

🏫 Phillips Elementary School (Max & Allison’s School) // 84 Essex St.
Where it all began… and where Max learned the hard way not to mess with local legends. We’ve all had those high school moments. (Minus the witches, hopefully).

🏠 Max & Dani’s House // Ocean Avenue
The holy grail! That iconic witchy house with the turret is a private residence, so be a kind human and admire from a distance, darlings. Let’s not bother the current residents, no matter how badly you want to see the talking cat.

🍂 Pioneer Village (Thackery Binx’s Village) // 98 West Ave.
A step back to 1693 where our favorite immortal black cat’s story began. It’s charming, rustic, and just a little bit cursed.

Have you done a Hocus Pocus tour of Salem? It’s the ultimate way to get into the spooky spirit!

My girls are obsessed with @ghostbusters (clearly, they inherited their parents’ impeccable taste in cinema), and Arielle asked if we could visit the actual firehouse on our 2025 NYC trip.

My first thought: “It’s… real?”

Darlings, it is. And it’s iconic.

Hook & Ladder Company 8 @officialghostbustershq in Tribeca is a real, working fire station. So no, you can’t just waltz in and slide down the pole (I asked. Kidding. Mostly.), but you can live out your ‘80s movie-magic dreams, snag that perfect photo, and see the logo on the sidewalk.

It was a total New York first for me—even after living there!—and it was 100% my daughter’s idea.

Honestly, playing tourist in a city you thought you knew, all led by your kids? That’s its own kind of magic. ✨

Who you gonna call? 📞👻

What iconic movie spot should we hit next?
