I remember sitting in the first session of my environmental science class as a sophomore in college. I needed to fulfill a core educational requirement with a science class and since my boyfriend (future husband) had just started his career in environmental science, I thought choosing this specific class would be a good way to learn a little bit about his work.
The first words out of the professor’s mouth:
“The earth will not be worth living on in 50 years so don’t even think about having children.”
The class sat in silence. How’s that for making an impression? And for a young woman who had just started dating someone that I could actually see myself having a family with, I felt very confused.
Twelve years later we did have a child and though she brings us so much joy, I am concerned about the state of our environment. And while I’m not a full-on activist, I know that change begins with small, doable things. Here are 3 ways to be kind to the environment this Earth Day.
1. Unplug One Thing
2. Use a Reusable Water Bottle or Coffee Mug.
3. Shop locally, shop organically.
How are you helping the environment this Earth Day?
