It has been way too long since I’ve made the trip over the pond to visit Europe! And with a baby on the way, it looks like I might be sticking to more local trips for a while longer. However, I like to live vicariously through other travel influencers, as well as some of my favorite shows. Keep reading for 5 shows to watch when you have a serious case of wanderlust.
White Lotus
The jury is still out on how I feel about White Lotus, with the exception of Jennifer Coolidge’s amazing performance in both seasons (she went to my college!). I don’t think it’s a show you’re supposed to “enjoy” per se, but I will say that I love all of the scenery in season 2. Filmed on location in Sicily, Italy, you see the gorgeous beaches, the cliffs, and the adorable little ancient towns of this picturesque area. I’ve never been to Italy, but watching this show got me itching to plan my next trip to these sunny shores.
Emily in Paris
Say what you will about Emily in Paris – the gauche fashion, the stereotypes of both the French and Americans, Emily can be an annoying character and is terrible at her job – I agree on all counts. But I adore the Parisian scenery, as well as the French countryside that is heavily featured in Season 3. Also, the food looks to die for and as a pregnant woman who finds nothing appetizing, that is saying something.
Rick Steves Europe
I will argue that Rick Steves Europe is the best travel show to ever exist. I am a huge Rick Steves fan (fun fact: I went to one of his appearances in 2017 and it did not disappoint) and whenever I am really feeling the sting of wanderlust I will pop on one of his many shows. He doesn’t just hit the high points, he relies on local guides to show him the hidden gems and is respectful of their culture.
Sherlock
I have been to London three times and I never get tired of this beautiful city. This addictive BBC show only has about a dozen or so episodes over four seasons, but each tells a really good story. Plus, you get to see the beauty of London while watching the beautiful Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock. I’ve been praying for them to bring it back for another season but for now I’ll just keep rewatching past episodes.
Downton Abbey
Unlike Sherlock, if you tune into Downton Abbey you will have days of entertainment ahead of you, filled with pretty pictures of the English countryside and gorgeous manors. The fashion is to die for as well. With six seasons and two movies, the last of which also featured the French Riviera, you’ll feel as if you’ve become a part of the Crawley family – or at least friends with those who so faithfully serve them. Next time I travel to England, I will be going to Highclere Castle, where the exterior shots of Downton were filmed.
