Though I am so excited to spend Thanksgiving at my Nunny’s this year after several holidays at home (Alex made some AMAZING dinners), I have been known to travel on Turkey Day. When I was eleven we spent it in New York City, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. And in 2014 we were lucky to do it again. In 2013 I spent Thanksgiving celebrating St. Andrews Day in the basement of the British consulate in Sophia, Bulgaria (that’s a very long story). So for those of you looking to travel, I’m sharing some beautiful places to spend Thanksgiving, festive destinations for your holiday!
Woodstock, VT
On our way up to our stay at the Trapp Family Lodge, we made a stop in Woodstock, Vermont before making the final leg of the journey to Stowe. This enchanting town is a little over two hours north of Boston and it is definitely worth a trip. Full of adorable boutiques and New England charm, Woodstock is a historical gem that I wish we had had more time to explore.
Stowe, VT
Stowe, Vermont is a tiny little town on the side of a mountain. I’ve heard so much about this New England mainstay and, let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint. Make sure you check out the restaurants just off the center of town because there is something there for everyone.
Peterborough, NH
Home to Grover’s Corners, Peterborough, NH was actually the inspiration for Thornton Wilder’s 1938 play, “Our Town.” At about an hour and a half away from Boston, this quaint New Hampshire town is the perfect day trip for those looking for food and fun while avoiding the crowds of other artistic escapes like Portsmouth, NH.
Portsmouth, NH
Speaking of … Portsmouth, NH is not only picturesque, but it also has something for the whole family. This seaside city is only about an hour and 15 minutes from Boston, and it’s easy to spend an entire day getting lost in the area’s shops and enjoying the bustling restaurant scene.
Keene, NH
A little over an hour and 45 minutes from Boston, Keene is home to Keene State College. And because of the large student population, this small city is chocked full of unique shops and eateries. I particularly love the antique and consignment shopping and the Walldog murals.
Concord, MA
There is so much to see in Concord, MA, the birthplace of the American Revolution. But this charming town is more than just a patriotic destination. Home to great authors like Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau, it is full of fantastic museums. And the restaurant scene has options that will feed the whole family.
Wickford, RI
Wickford Village is the most adorable little seaside village full of historic homes, unique shops and gorgeous ocean views. While we only had the opportunity to spend a few hours here in the spring, I am already looking forward to our return.
Where will you be spending Thanksgiving? And what will you be wearing?
