I’ve been to the Oscars.
Well, kind of.
When I was younger, I wanted to be an actress and my ultimate goal was to attend the Oscars and win one of those little gold statuettes. I would watch the awards every year, planning my own acceptance speech and my Uncle Fred who worked as a talent agent in Hollywood used to tell us all about his experiences at the Awards. When I was 10 years old he passed away and going to the Oscars became that much more important.
After years studying dance, voice and acting throughout grade school & high school followed by a year in acting school in NYC, I decided that the bright lights of Broadway and the silver screen were not my calling. I enjoyed writing and reporting about film more than performing. Fast forward a few years and I found myself reporting from the Red Carpet at the 2011 Academy Awards. That night, after we had wrapped, I called my mom sobbing. I was just so happy! Though it wasn’t how I had always pictured my Oscar experience, it was still a dream come true. It’s been 10 years & I still can’t even believe I got to go!
While tonight I will be watching the ceremony from my couch, in my loungewear, after putting my little starlet to bed, I hope that someday I’ll be able to go back to the Oscars. Maybe I’ll be reporting again, maybe I’ll be a guest. Maybe I’ll be nominated for writing! I’m not ruling anything out.
If I had given up on my dream of going to the Oscars, I would have never gone in 2011. So, if there is one thing that I’ve learned in life it’s this: though things may not happen as planned if you rule it out, it will never come true. Dream big, little ones.
