The news is out. With the pandemic still ongoing health experts have been telling people not to travel this Labor Day weekend. But if you stay safe, mask up and steer close to home, that doesn’t mean you can’t spend some time soaking up the local scenery. If you live in New England, I have some Labor Day destinations you will love.
Salem, MA
I’ll be heading to my favorite spooky spot this weekend! Since I grew up right next door, I could probably lead tours around this historical city. Salem has some of my favorite restaurants, cafes and shops. It also has a world-class museum in the PEM, and my favorite Halloween movie was filmed there (Hocus Pocus, of course). You can check out more about where to go, what to eat and where to shop in Salem, as well as other beautiful destinations on the North Shore of Massachusetts here.
Concord, MA
There is so much to see of Massachusetts, including the birthplace of the American Revolution, Concord. But this charming town is more than just a patriotic destination. It was home to some of the most prolific transcendentalist writers like Louisa May Alcott and Ralph Waldo Emerson, and the downtown is full of great shopping and restaurants. If you want to learn more about Concord, MA, check out my travel guide.
Portsmouth, NH
This seaside city is not only picturesque, but it also has something for the whole family. If you’re from the Boston area, you can get there in about an hour and 15 minutes. In Portsmouth it’s easy to spend an entire day getting lost in the area’s shops and enjoying the bustling restaurant scene. Find out more in my travel guide to Portsmouth, NH.
Stowe, VT
Later this month I’ll be posting my full day trip travel guide to Stowe, VT, but I couldn’t leave it off of this list. While Stowe is known for being a great ski town, it has transformed itself into a four season destination. My favorite shop ended up being in a shared building, the Stowe Mercantile. You definitely want to check out this fun-filled store. Don’t forget to keep checking back for more on Stowe.
Woodstock, VT
Another day trip travel guide you can look forward to this month! Woodstock, VT has proclaimed itself “America’s Prettiest Town” and as soon as we rolled in, we could see why. The main street is full of fun shops with something for everyone. But make sure you take the time to stroll through some of the residential areas because the homes here are gorgeous. The only mistake I made is visiting on a Monday when many of the restaurants are closed. Stay tuned for more soon!
Wickford Village, RI
Wickford Village is the most adorable little seaside place full of historic homes, unique shops and gorgeous ocean views. While we only had the opportunity to spend a few hours here back in April, I am already looking forward to our return. To read more about this quaint village, check out my full travel guide.
