The holidays can be so busy but it’s so important to get in some family time since that is what the season is really about, right? We enjoyed a fun family weekend getaway in Newport and it turned out to be the perfect Christmas vacation. Here are six things to do in Newport at Christmastime.
Visit the Newport Mansions
I’ll start with the most obvious. The Newport Mansions are all decorated for Christmas and they are gorgeous! I just fell in love with the impeccably decorated mantels and Christmas trees in almost every room. If you love Christmas decorations, the Newport Mansions are major goals.
Check out “Sparkling Lights at the Breakers”
Sparkling Lights at The Breakers: An Outdoor Magical Wonderland is a show that is not to be missed! While it is a separate ticket from your regular admission or membership, it gives you the opportunity to see The Breakers all lit up at night. And you can go inside too so you also get to see the beautiful trees inside.
Enjoy a Hot Buttered Rum at The Black Pearl
The Black Pearl is a mainstay on Bannister’s Wharf in Newport. And this year they have enclosed their outdoor dining space and brought in space heaters so you basically are sitting inside a huge snowglobe – complete with bar! I warmed up with a hot buttered rum which was so delicious and festive.
Go Christmas Shopping
If you haven’t finished your gift shopping yet, you will find something for everyone in the shops of Newport. I particularly loved popping in and out of stores along Spring and Thames Streets. If you are looking for an old-fashioned Newport experience, you must check out Royal Male on Spring. But be prepared to drop quite a bit of your shopping money! And I loved stopping by Kiel James Patrick on Bowen’s Wharf. So festive!
Enjoy a Snowball in Hell at the Clarke Cooke House
When I had asked for suggestions on where to go and what to eat, I cannot tell you how many people replied with this gem on Bannister’s Wharf. The Clarke Cooke House is famous and has played host to celebrities, world leaders, and royalty. My favorite part of our visit to this world-renowned restaurant? The Snowball in Hell chocolate dessert was so good, I’m still dreaming about it!
Visit Newport Lighthouse on Goat Island
We visited this beautiful lighthouse at night and during the day and I would suggest you do the same. You can park in the visitor parking at Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina and then walk around the path to the lighthouse. That is the only way you can get close enough to take a great picture. Plus you’ll have a gorgeous view of the Newport Bridge! And, if you have the time and inclination, you can rent some skates and hit the ice. Gurney’s has a rink that is open most days from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
