A few weeks ago we drove down to Rhode Island to visit Wicked Tulips. But what day trip would be complete without some lunch? So we made a stop on our way down in Wickford Village. It’s the most adorable little seaside place full of historic homes, unique shops and gorgeous ocean views. While we only had the opportunity to spend a few hours here, I am already looking forward to our return. Here is an abridged travel guide to Wickford, RI.
When to Go
As someone who prefers warm weather, I’m looking forward to going back to Wickford in the summer when it’s real beach weather. But it was beautiful on a spring day and I can imagine early fall would be nice as well. Since it reminds me a lot of Rockport, I’d also love to see it in the winter decked out in holiday lights. I’ve heard that every year the village has a Christmas Tree lighting – I bet that would be a festive time!
Where to Eat
We were lucky enough to snag a table on the deck at Tavern by the Sea. And by lucky, I mean that for a spot right next to the water it was an hour and 45 minute wait. The hostess practically apologized to me when she offered me a table under the awning, which was perfect for us because Arielle has very light eyes and will not wear her sunglasses.
With a pretty comprehensive kid’s menu and crayons available, this is a great place for the whole family. Alex and I split the calamari which was the best I’ve ever had. The cup of lobster bisque that I had was also amazing. Alex said that while his crab cake was delicious, the Cobb salad he ordered was good but nothing special. Arielle loved her mini cheese pizza. A meal for the three of us cost about $65 plus tip, so it was not an inexpensive afternoon. But the service was excellent and even sitting further inwards on the deck, the views were lovely. I would definitely eat at Tavern by the Sea again.
Other options in the area are Wickford on the Water for a sit down meal, or Shayna’s Place for coffee and sandwiches.
Where to Shop
Admittedly I didn’t get to enjoy too much retail therapy, but I did get in some window shopping and there are some adorable boutiques to visit in Wickford Village. Beauty and the Bath has some Instagram worthy bath products in their display that would be perfect for gifting. I really want to get back to Teddy Bearskins to snap up some of the cutest children’s clothing for Arielle. The World Store is right across from Tavern by the Sea and has all kinds of curious items in the window, as well as toys. If you want to stock up on outdoor gear, you’ll love The Kayak Centre. And the Eclectic Bungalow has a great selection of home furnishings.
What to see
Take a stroll down Main Street, even well past the downtown, to see some beautiful historic homes. You’ll also want to check out Brown Street where you’ll find most of the stores. You can rent a boat and go for a ride in Wickford Cove or hit North Kingstown Town Beach for a swim or to relax on the sand.
We loved our short time in Wickford Village and we cannot wait to go back to do a little more shopping and maybe have a beach day.
