I don’t know about you, but Covid and Quarantine has not brought the best out of me, health-wise that is. Up until just recently (see my latest update on my New Year’s Resolutions) I haven’t been eating what I should, I haven’t been getting enough exercise and I haven’t been focusing enough on my mental health. And though I know that between working from home, socially distancing, and homeschooling, that there is very little time to devote to getting into better shape physically and emotionally, as we start to see the light at the end of the tunnel and the world begins to open up, it’s so important that we prioritize ourselves before we get back to the grind. So, in honor of World Health Day, here are 3 easy ways to get healthy now.
Drink More Water
I know what you’re thinking but I am not going to tell you to drink eight cups of water a day right away. Start small by adding a cup of herbal tea to your morning or nightly routine. Even your daily cup of coffee can be hydrating. You can also “eat” your water by incorporating more fruit into your diet. Fruit is packed with water and tastes sweet and delicious! That also means a smoothie can help you stay hydrated. Getting enough water isn’t just good for your body, it can also help boost your energy levels and is anti-aging. Enough said!
Take a Walk
I was a competitive dancer and always thought that working out meant working up a sweat – which is definitely something that I enjoy and should do more often. But I often don’t have the time for a full workout session. So I’ve been trying to get in some light movement each day, and that mostly comes in the form of an afternoon walk with Arielle. Since we started walking on the regular, I’ve noticed a difference in my energy levels and my weight. It’s time that I really enjoy spending with my little girl and it’s so nice to get out of the house after a long winter! So next time you have a few minutes to yourself, take a short walk around the block. Or if you have an hour, why not call up a friend and ask them to walk with you? It will act as an instant mood booster.
Take a Few Minutes to Breathe
This can be anything, from just stepping away from the hustle and bustle of the family living room to take a few moments alone when you need it, to carving out a dedicated space and time to repeat a special mantra (you can find out more about mantras and how you can discover your own here). Whatever you have the time for, whenever you need it, just breathe. My favorite is the 4-7-8 Breathing Technique. You breathe in for four counts, hold your breath for seven counts and then exhale for eight counts. This technique helps to reduce anxiety and can help you get to sleep – something all of us need these days!
