Just because Black History Month is coming to an end, it does not mean that support for the black community should end. I will be continuing my education, as well as my daughter’s on racism and how to be an ally to people of color. And that includes buying from black-owned businesses. And I’ve found five black-owned brands with unique products that you need to know about.
The Sip
About The Brand
Moms and millenials Erica Davis and Catherine Carter were inspired by their monthly get-togethers when they founded The Sip. During those girls nights, they liked to discover new champagnes. But, as we all know, champagne can be expensive. The two looked for a “champagne discovery experience” but it didn’t exist so they created their own!
About The Product:
You get three mini bottles of sparkling wines from all over the world on a bi-monthly basis. Shipping is free. You can pay by the box or if you prepay for a year you save $30 and receive a $10 credit towards a full-size bottle.
Alexandra Winbush
About the Brand
Alexandra Winbush, created by actress Brittney Winbush in 2018, is focused on mental health awareness and helping people embrace positive vibes. The Brooklyn-based business only sells two things: mood-boosting candles and calming teas.
About the Product:
Winbush has curated different candle and tea sets for three different moods. There is the September Sixth Set, the Sunday in Brooklyn Set and the Window Seat Set. Each set comes with a perfectly curated playlist so all you have to do is light your candle, sip on your tea, enjoy the music and let the mood settle in.
Silked
About the Brand:
Silked was founded in LA by Phoenix Gonzalez and Sandra McCurdy in 2017. Their goal was to boost beauty sleep with their environmentally responsible and travel-friendly pillow cast. Since then, they’ve launched eye masks and hair scrunchies.
About the Product:
Their 100% silk face mask is hypoallergenic and antibacterial so you’re not only protecting yourself from germs, you’re also being gentle on your skin. Available in several designs, they’re washable and feature an interior pocket that can hold an N95 filter. I love the cheetah print mask!
Haus Urban
About the Brand:
Hassan Sayyed was a lifelong performer who had an accident that ended his career as an entertainer. Instead of leaving the industry, he decided to create a line of skincare products for performers that are constantly in stage makeup and under hot lights. With that, Haus Urban was born in 2015.
About the Product:
While the brand’s signature series, the Iconic Creme Cleanser, the Double Time Facial Toner and the Curtain Call Clarifying Moisturizer, were made specifically with performers in mind, anyone can use the products. They’re also made from natural ingredients!
HarperIman Dolls
About the Brand:
Founded by a mother-daughter duo, HarperIman Dolls was created to fill a large void in the toy industry – dolls of color that accurately represent different skin tones and hair textures. Before HarperIman’s beautiful creations came on the scene, there were very few options out there. Now the company focuses on making dolls of color that provide positive affirmations to children of color.
About the Product:
Each HarperIman Doll is handmade and geared toward little ones ages 3 and up. Parents can choose from various skin tones and hair textures, making each doll one of a kind. Right now their baby doll is sold out but as soon as it’s back in stock I’m getting one for Arielle!
