Let’s be honest, darlings. A little magic is always welcome, but a little sugar? That’s non-negotiable. Salem might be famous for its bewitching history, but its culinary scene is a spell all its own, especially when it comes to satisfying a sweet tooth.
Whether you’re floating through town on a solo trip, wrangling the little ones on a family day out (check out my guide to kid-friendly Salem here), escaping for a romantic weekend, or just popping into Witch City for a few hours, you need a game plan. And that plan should absolutely involve dessert. This city is, for lack of a better term, culinary-blessed, and I’ve done the very delicious research to prove it.
Here are the absolute must-visit spots for the best sweets and treats in Salem, MA. You can thank me later.

Lulu’s Bakery and Pantry
Consider this your chic, Parisian-inspired haven right in the heart of Salem. Lulu’s is one of those places that just gets everything right. Co-owner Nikki Economides actually went to school in Paris to perfect her craft, and trust me, you can taste it in every flaky, buttery bite of their pastries.
But it doesn’t stop there. Their espresso and tea drinks are divine, with unique seasonal flavors that always feel like a special treat, and a breakfast sandwich on one of their savory biscuits is the ultimate way to start your day. Hands down, it’s one of my favorite cafes on the entire North Shore.

Coffee Time Bakery
Some treasures require a bit of a quest. This beloved spot isn’t in the downtown hustle, but it is absolutely worth the trek. Coffee Time is an old-school gem with a fiercely loyal following. During Hanukkah, their sufganiyot are to die for, and their Pączki (pronounced “POONCH-kee”) are so legendary, we’ve been making an annual pilgrimage to this small bakery for years just to get our hands on them. It’s a true local’s secret.

A.J. King’s Artisan Bakers
With two outposts in the city, A.J. King’s is your go-to for gorgeous, crusty, artisan bread. But darling, don’t you dare stop there. While the location near the Peabody line is more of a grab-and-go spot where the bread magic happens, the downtown cafe is a perfect place to pause. They have an incredible selection of delicious treats, sandwiches, and some seriously fun drinks—their special October menu is always a creative delight!

Boston Burger Co.
I know what you’re thinking—a burger joint on a sweets list? Just trust me. While their burgers are phenomenal (the veggie patty is a dream), the real showstoppers are the Freak Frappes. These are not your average milkshakes; they are towering, over-the-top works of art. With flavors like “Nutella” and “S’more Than You Can Handle,” they are decadent, unapologetically extra, and so much fun. Do yourself a favor and plan to share one… or don’t. They’ll give you a to-go cup for your glorious leftovers.

The Chocolate Pantry
Prepare for a global experience. This beautiful, women-owned shop is so much more than a candy store. It’s a curated collection of the finest chocolates imported from Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, and beyond. We’re talking sophisticated, handcrafted confections with over 50 flavors to choose from, each piece hand-wrapped like the tiny treasure it is. They also have lovely vegan and sugar-free options available, so everyone can indulge.

Kakawa Chocolate House
Kakawa is an experience. This artisanal chocolate shop started in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and its only eastern outpost is right here in Salem. They are dedicated to the history of chocolate, producing high-quality creations that are both unique and deeply delicious. You absolutely must try their drinking chocolate elixirs. They are so rich and decadent, they could—and perhaps should—be considered a full meal. It’s pure, liquid luxury.

Jaho Coffee Roaster & Wine Bar
While Jaho now has locations from Boston to Japan, the original shop was born right here on Salem’s Derby Street. It has that perfect buzzy-but-cozy vibe, and their coffee menu is endlessly creative. They always have fun seasonal lattes that are worth straying from your usual order for, and a case full of delicious pastries to pair perfectly with your morning (or afternoon) cuppa.
