You could say that I have “Blonde Ambition.”
Even though I have naturally dark brown hair, I have been experimenting with shades of blonde since I was 11 years old when my mom finally allowed me to get highlights. While I think she was trying to keep me from using Sun-In, I will always be grateful to her for starting me on the right path of hair care. I’ve been lucky that despite trying every color under the sun, including pink, purple, red, and black, I’ve never suffered serious damage to my hair.
So when I decided in November to leave my rose gold hair behind and go platinum, I turned to the expert, my hairstylist, Heather Douty Normandie of Hair Society Salon. And though it took a few salon sessions, lots of patience, and great skill on Heather’s part, this most recent visit gave me the blonde bombshell look of my dreams!
Going platinum is a huge commitment so I asked Heather to share the three things you need to consider before making the leap to platinum blonde. (With my own commentary below!)
1. Take your Hair Condition & Type into Account
The first thing I would say is that when thinking of going platinum blonde you have to consider the integrity of your hair: whether it’s naturally thin or has any damage from heat and styling or previous colors.”
Heather
As I said, I have naturally dark, thick hair. But when I decided to go platinum, Heather made sure to take my hair history into account and we made the transition slowly and gently to keep my hair healthy and prevent breakage.
2. What is your starting color?
You can’t expect to be platinum without at least three appointments to get you there.”
Heather
It definitely took me a while to get to where I wanted to be, and that was coming from already being blonde to accommodate the pink hue I loved!
3. Maintenance
Continue to do conditioning treatments, Olaplex 3 being my favorite, and make sure you’re using the right products and keeping up with appointments. Also be careful with irons!”
Heather
After I let my Olaplex 3 treatment soak in, I use a clarifying shampoo first to get rid of any product buildup. Then I use a purple shampoo and conditioner to get rid of any brassiness. I do heat style my hair, but because I only wash it twice a week, it’s not like I’m running a curling iron or a hairdryer over it every day. I see Heather every four to five weeks to have my roots touched up.
If you’re considering going platinum, make sure you keep these three things in mind when talking with your stylist. And feel free to email or DM me on Instagram if you want to ask me any questions about my experience!
