Everything You Need to Sleep Better on Your Vacation

Ah, vacation! Days filled with adventure, nights filled with… fitful sleep, tossing and turning in an unfamiliar bed? Yeah, been there. Luckily, a restful slumber doesn’t have to be a casualty of your wanderlust. Here are some travel heroes, everything you need to sleep better on your vacation. These items will ensure you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to conquer that next sightseeing mission:

1. Embrace the Darkness:

No matter how romantic the moonlight streaming through the window seems, it’s an enemy of sleep. Pack a sleep mask to block out unwanted light, whether it’s from the streetlamps outside or a roommate with a late-night reading habit. Opt for a comfy, adjustable one that sits lightly on your face without smushing your lashes. I love this silk eye mask that you can find on Amazon and it’s less that $10!

2. Slip into Silk:

Swap out that scratchy hotel pillowcase for a silk one. Silk’s smooth texture reduces friction, meaning less hair frizz and more zzz’s. It’s also naturally cooling, a bonus for those balmy nights in exotic locales. Plus, you’ll feel like royalty even in a hostel bunk. Make sure you pack this budget-friendly silk pillowcase in your carry-on!

3. Breathe Easy:

Dry hotel air can wreak havoc on your sinuses and snooze. A travel humidifier adds moisture to the air, easing congestion and promoting restful sleep. Instead of packing that big one on your nightstand, pick up this travel-size humidifier which also offers different colored lights so you have a nightlight built in!

4. Hush the World:

Earbuds can work, but for truly transformative silence, invest in a good pair of earplugs. Choose a comfortable, non-irritating material like silicone and find the perfect fit for your ear canals. No more midnight traffic or snoring neighbors – just sweet, sweet silence. I recently discovered Loop earplugs and they have been a major game-changer in my sleep cycle.

Bonus Tip:

Stick to your own sleep schedule as much as possible, even if you’re in a different time zone. Adjust gradually and avoid screen time before bed – blue light is the enemy of melatonin production.

I really thought I had it in the bag. I walked into that kindergarten graduation in my oversized sunglasses, feeling incredibly proud that I hadn’t shed a single tear. I was holding it together beautifully.

Then came the bait and switch. They started gentle with the classics—a sweet little rendition of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”—everyone’s smiling, everything is chic and fine. But then they pulled out a song that absolutely ruined me. Cue the waterworks and RIP to my perfectly winged eyeliner.

I cannot believe my baby girl just walked back through the door on her very last day of Kindergarten. A piece of my heart is definitely mourning the end of the “baby time” chapter and all the sweetness that came with those tiny years.

But honestly? The overwhelming feeling is excitement, because I get her now. We are officially entering the big kid era, and my itinerary is overflowing with plans. We’ve got bags to pack, new places to see, and so many adventures lined up for the weeks ahead.

Motherhood in the little years is a beautiful, cha Motherhood in the little years is a beautiful, chaotic, and wonderful whirlwind. 

Between the endless scheduling and the sheer energy it takes to keep everything running, it is so easy to overlook the small, unscripted moments that make this chapter so brilliant.

We talk a lot about the milestones, but what about the spontaneous living room ballet recitals? The architectural pillow forts that take over the living room? The fact that my wardrobe is now routinely critiqued by two tiny fashion directors who strongly advocate for more sequins or that while I might want chocolate ice cream at the pretend Gelateria in my yard I instead get handed a flavor called “Rainbow Chocolate Pink”?

These are the unplanned perks. The moments that force you to be present, laugh a little louder, and remember that life doesn’t have to be perfectly tidy to be incredibly beautiful.

These are the Blink-and-You-Miss-It Moments I’m fiercely clinging to as a mom to two little girls who I love more than anything.

It has been two and a half years since we lost her, and if there is one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: it doesn’t matter how many years a person gets on this earth. Living a remarkably long, beautiful life doesn’t make it one bit easier for the people who have to stay behind and say goodbye.

I still have that immediate, gut reaction to pick up the phone and call her the second something exciting happens in our lives. Arielle just performed at her very first Open Mic, and my first thought was how much I wanted to tell Nunny all about it. Aurora isn’t in this video—she’d make her appearance the following year—and so often, when she hits a new milestone or does something for the very first time, my heart aches wishing Nunny was sitting right there to see it.

The world will truly never be the same without you in it. We love you so fiercely, and we miss you every single day.
