I have a closet full of beautiful summer outfits. But the one thing I wear on repeat is a knee length little black cotton dress. I have a few of them in semi-different styles, but they’re primarily the same cut, same fabric, same feel, same look. I call it my summer uniform.

To me, this is very ironic. When I was growing up in the Catholic school system, I absolutely hated my uniform. The kilts were dowdy, the shirts were stiff and the sweaters, itchy. In high school I would pack a second outfit in my bookbag so I could change out of my uniform as soon as the last bell rang. To me a uniform symbolized the stifling of creativity and imagination.

But here I am, over a decade later and I am so grateful for my collection of black tank and short sleeve cotton dresses. I can dress this wardrobe staple up with a pair of heels or fancy sandals and a summery rattan bag and shell jewelry. Or I can just throw on some flip flops and a baseball cap for a trip to the grocery store.

The cotton LBD really has become the MVP of my summer closet. I’ve included a shop section below to share some great options that are all under $100, with most way under $50. And make sure to check out my Instagram to see me rocking my uniform all summer long.
