I love a good costume. I love a good homemade costume even more, especially when it’s sourced from your own closet. And even though Halloween is only five days away, you still have time to put together an amazing look. Here are five costumes you already have in your closet and the items you need to create them in time for Halloween.
(Note: If you are still stuck for a costume, I have linked up the items below and all of them should arrive by Halloween if you grab them by October 28!)
Holly Golightly
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
I woke up super early to get this shot outside of Tiffany & Co. on Fifth Avenue. Many people got the reference and commented as they walked by but for a few, it went right over their head, mostly because this costume is made up of items most women would have in their closet and, well, it’s NYC and nothing phases a New Yorker.
What you need:
Little Black Dress
Black Shoes
Sunglasses
Pearl Necklace
Tiara or Sparkly Headband
Optional:
Cat
Croissant
Rosie the Riveter
I’ve seen women of all ages take on this iconic look at, let me tell you, it always looks amazing. This is another costume that I didn’t buy anything to create. We had the shirt and the headband and Alex hung up our flag to create the perfect backdrop. Arielle brought the much needed attitude.
What you need:
Button Down Shirt (sleeves rolled up to biceps)
Red Bandana
Jeans
Wednesday Addams
The Addams Family
I grew up idolizing Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams. She just seemed like the coolest girl ever. I finally got my stuff together a few years ago and made my childhood dreams come true when I spend Halloween in Salem as Wednesday Addams. And I had everything I needed in my closet!
What you need:
Black Skirt and Top or Dress
White Collar
Black Tights
Black Shoes
Optional:
Braided Pigtails (I went without because of my short hair but everyone still knew who I was)
Miss America
While it may be an outdated reference, this is an easy costume and every woman has a bathing suit or an old formal dress in their closet. I made this sash using wide white ribbon and stenciled “Miss America” on it. Throw on a crown and you’ve got a look for the night.
What you need:
Bathingsuit or Formal Dress
Crown
“Miss America” Sash
Princess Leia
Star Wars
I actually went with General Leia really which is much easier to source from your closet. While the outfit I was going for was mostly whites and creams, I stuck to darker neutrals for my pants, boots, top and vest. Because I have a bob and didn’t have time to get a wig, I wore a pair of earmuffs. This wasn’t my best effort, but people got it when I was standing next to our little Ewok.
What you Need:
Long Sleeved Shirt
Vest
Matching Pants
Boots
Hair in Two Buns or Earmuffs
What’s your go to costume? Or what other costumes can you find in your closet? Any great last minute costume ideas?
