This is 34.
I’ve had some pretty epic birthdays, but obviously this year’s August 4th celebration was a little different. However, it was no less wonderful.
Alex took care of Arielle in the morning so I could sleep in for a bit. For breakfast I enjoyed nova lox on a bagel as well as some orange juice after I got a big hug and kiss from my baby girl. It was wonderful watching her run around on my birthday this year. Last year she was still so small, she was barely rolling over!
I visited with my sister for a bit before taking a scenic drive along the North Shore. My mom had said she’d treat me to lunch at one of our favorite little haunts, Tartine’s. But when we pulled up in front of the restaurant, we found it was closed. So we kept driving until we found ourselves at the Salem Willows.
I hadn’t been to the Willows in years, but it has always held special memories for me, and my mom used to take her mom there for chop suey sandwiches. So we followed tradition and as we sat looking out over the water eating our Chinese food, I realized that sometimes life just leads you to where you should be.
Our next stop was my Nunny’s where she had some yummy treats and gifts waiting. It always amazes me that even at 99 years old she had glued a picture of me to the front of the envelope for my birthday card, and a picture of Arielle to the back. It was so sweet!
When I returned home I found a beautiful summer bouquet of flowers on my kitchen island from Alex and Arielle. Alex is also giving me a family photo shoot for my birthday so I’m looking forward to planning that and finding the perfect outfits. We finished out the day with a sushi dinner while watching one of my favorite films, Roman Holiday.
While I miss the birthdays where I’m traveling the world, this year’s celebration was perfect. After all, it’s more important than ever that everyone I love is happy and healthy. And for that I am grateful.
Here’s to 34. And here’s to many, many more.
