Hocus Pocus Filming Locations 2022

Salem, Massachusetts

October 10, 2022

salem-ma-travel-blogger

I actually shared this article two years ago but with the release of Hocus Pocus 2, and the fact that the original is one of my favorite movies, I decided to repost it with some new photographs and updated information. This does not include the shoot locations for Hocus Pocus 2, but don’t worry, I’m working on that later this fall! Here are a few of the film sites you can visit to get your Hocus Pocus on …

Salem Village

“Come little children I’ll take thee away, into a land of enchantment.”

~ Sarah Sanderson

The movie employed Pioneer Village, a living history museum in Salem’s Forest River Park, as Salem Village. This is where the opening scenes of the film took place – where Thackery Binx lived and where the Sanderson sisters were hanged. They offer tours between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. I suggest going during the week when the only people you’ll have to contend with are sixth-graders on field trips (I know, I was one of them).

Salem Common

“Amuck! Amuck! Amuck! Amuck!”

~ Sarah Sanderson

Salem Common is a beautiful place. We actually had our wedding pictures taken there! And it was not lost on me that we were standing where one of my favorite films was shot. A few years ago I actually got to watch Hocus Pocus out on the Common which was so much fun!

Max Dennison’s House

“It’s a full moon tonight. That’s when all the weirdos are out.”

~ Dani Dennison

Who didn’t want Max’s room as a child? Actually, I’d still kill for that crow’s nest. And though I have no idea if that’s how it looks inside, you can at least check out where the exterior scenes of Max’s house were shot on Ocean Avenue in Salem. It is a private home so I wouldn’t hang out too long, but it’s right next to a beach so you can at least take a walk in the neighborhood without looking like a total weirdo.

Allison’s House

“Rich people, they’ll probably make us drink cider and bob for apples.”

~ Dani Dennison

If Max’s room was the dream abode of every child, Allison’s house is every woman’s dream home. The gorgeous gables, the stately fence, the huge rooms! I want to live there. Unfortunately, The Ropes Mansion, which served as the exterior for Allison’s home, looks nothing like the grand mansion on the inside. It is definitely luxurious, but like any old home in New England, the rooms are small and the hallways are even smaller.

Old Town Hall

“I put a spell on you and now you’re mine.”

~ Winifred Sanderson

As you can probably tell from it’s name, this was Salem’s Town Hall before the offices outgrew the building. Now, the setting for the huge Halloween Bash where Bette Midler famously sang, “I Put a Spell on You,” is available for wedding rentals. It also houses the production, “Cry Innocent”. The building holds expositions, recitals and festivals on select weekends so you can go inside, though the interior party shots were not filmed there.

Jacob Bailey High School

“It is a prison for children.”

~ Winifred Sanderson

Two years ago I discovered that the outside of Jacob Bailey High School, where Max, Allison and Dani launched their attack and burned the Sanderson sisters, is located right off of Salem Common. Phillips Elementary School shut down a year before Hocus Pocus was filmed, and It’s now a condominium complex.

While you’re in Salem (full travel guide to Salem) why not check out some of my other favorite haunts like Gulu Gulu Cafe, Flying Saucer Pizza Company, or Front Street Coffee House. Pick up a new thriller at the adorable Wicked Good Books, or wander through the exhibits at the world-class Peabody Essex Museum (PEM).

And if you find any other filming locations, please share!

What it’s Like to Have a Miscarriage

Grand Central Station, last summer. Just Arielle, Grand Central Station, last summer. Just Arielle, Aurora, and me, and Alex behind the camera, standing at the starting line of our NYC adventure. 🍎✨

To be perfectly honest, I had never really questioned if they’d be able to handle the city that made me who I am today. I know the sheer energy of New York can easily overwhelm some, and right before this photo was snapped, I felt a tiny, completely unnecessary twinge of nervousness.

I shouldn’t have. They took to the concrete jungle like absolute champs. Real city kids, through and through.

Watching them hold their own in that magnificent, bustling crowd reminded me of the most important lesson I am determined to teach my daughters: the absolute power of the “And.”

Society loves to make us choose. Be soft or be strong. Be a devoted mother or be fiercely ambitious. Wear the pearls or have the grit.

But the magic lives right in the middle. We don’t survive on sweetness alone—we survive on a specific brand of unapologetic grit, usually delivered with a sharp wit and flawless lipstick.

That is the heritage I’m passing down to my girls.

I want them to know they can love all things pink, sparkly, and traditionally feminine, and still have a spine made of absolute steel. They can be kind, and they can enforce fierce boundaries. They can be the masterpiece, and the artist holding the brush.

Here’s to the women who are multi-dimensional, and to the little girls we are raising to shatter every single box they are put in. 🥂✨

Tell me below: what is your favorite fierce “And” trait that you’re proudly owning right now? 👇🖤

Plot twists, Parisian pastries, and a whole lot of Plot twists, Parisian pastries, and a whole lot of pivoting. 🥐✨

Here’s the reality of April School Vacation week when you’re juggling freelance deadlines, content creation, and making magic for the girls. From viral bakery misses (I’ll be back for that sugar mallet!) to triumphant carnival wins (Arielle is now the proud owner of two Labubus 🧸), it was a week of high-low glam and pure survival.

We dodged parking disasters, conquered Boston with Alex, paired McDonald’s with L.A. Burdick chocolate mice, and lived to tell the tale. It’s about owning the chaos, loving your kids fiercely, and still finding the perfect croissant along the way. Grab your iced chai and swipe to see our week. 🥂

Even with all the unexpected plot twists, a part of me wishes this week could have lasted forever. Arielle, on the other hand, is more than ready to get back to her school runway. Summer vacation is on the horizon—but honestly, it can’t get here fast enough! ✨

How did you survive school vacation week? Tell me I’m not the only one already counting down the days until summer! 👇💬

The ultimate luxury for a working mama? Skipping t The ultimate luxury for a working mama? Skipping the daily lunch packing and never having to worry about sending diapers to childcare. ✨

I recently toured the gorgeous new BrightPath in Woburn, and it is a total breath of fresh air. Finding childcare that actually aligns with your family’s vibe can feel impossible, but this space is intentionally designed to foster real imagination—minus the sensory overload.

The true standout, though, is how much mental load they take completely off your plate. You can drop the morning scramble because they supply the diapers, the wipes, AND serve beautifully balanced, nutritious meals. Add in those early 6:30 AM drop-offs and a massive, multi-zone playground, and it’s basically a country club for your little ones.

Here is everything you need to know:

📍 Location: BrightPath Woburn
👶 Ages: Beautiful, handicap-accessible classrooms for 6 weeks to 7 years old
⏰ Hours: Care starts as early as 6:30 AM
🍼 The Perks: Diapers, wipes, meals, and snacks are ALL included!

Brightpath Woburn is now erolling! Drop a 🎒 in the comments if you’re ready to outsource the morning chaos, and head to the link in my bio to schedule a tour of your local BrightPath!

Lately, I’ve been opening up a lot more about what Lately, I’ve been opening up a lot more about what I actually do for a living with the people who have recently come into my life through the girls’ school and activities. And honestly? The questions I get are fascinating.

✨“How did you get into this?”
⚡️“Do you just get a bunch of free stuff and post about it?”

Even the PR teams I work with sometimes ask, “So, is it just parties every night for you guys?”

The answer is... complicated.

Sometimes, yes. I have weeks where it feels like a nonstop party—which is exactly what last week was. And then there are weeks where the calendar is clear and it’s just the standard, beautiful chaos of raising a family. So, you can imagine the sheer adrenaline required when I have an event every night stacked on top of the regular family hustle.

I want to be completely clear: while it looks glamorous and fun on the grid, it is work. Work that I fiercely love, but work nonetheless. And believe it or not—I might get some heat for saying this, but that’s fine—it is work that not everyone is cut out for.

If that sounds like a challenge to you, I say go ahead and give the content creation life a try! If you make it, I will be the first one raising a glass and cheering you on, because I am never one to wish badly on someone else’s success. And if you don’t? Well, maybe you’ll understand exactly what I’m saying here. 😉

I love this life, and I wouldn’t change a single thing. Even when I am so wildly overextended that I end up collapsing with a cold by Saturday (guilty!).

But if you’ve ever been curious, here is what one of my truly busy weeks as a content creator and mom of two actually looks like. 🎬

April school vacation week, but make it chic. 🥂✨ April school vacation week, but make it chic. 🥂✨

Welcome to Part 2 of our favorite local “vacation” escapes!

We are balancing the beautiful chaos of kid energy with some unapologetic glamour this week. Because who says you can’t pair a stroller with a little coastal castle exploring?

Here is the itinerary for surviving (and actually enjoying) the week:

* The New England Aquarium: A Boston staple. Surviving the penguin exhibit before noon is basically an Olympic sport.
* House of Seven Gables: A dose of history with a slightly moody, coastal edge.
* Beauty and the Beast at the Citizen’s Opera House: Swapping the sneakers for something polished to take in some pure theater magic.
* The Malibu Barbie Cafe: Serving all the pink, playful sparkle, and unapologetic feminine energy for the girls.
* Hammond Castle: Stunning European stone architecture right on the water. No passport required.
* Castle Hill Crane Estate: We took the Cat’s Meow tour on Saturday and it was absolute twenties perfection.
* Avra: Sleek, chic, and strictly for the parents. You’ve earned a spectacular cocktail.

It’s high-low motherhood at its finest. No boarding pass required, just a great pair of sunglasses and a very strong espresso. ☕️🕶️

Happy Patriot’s Day! 🇺🇸✨ Most days, you’ll find m Happy Patriot’s Day! 🇺🇸✨

Most days, you’ll find me sharing our chicest travel itineraries, boutique hotel finds, and the beautifully curated chaos of packing stilettos and strollers for our next flight. And while building this travel diary is the absolute dream, I realized lately that I rarely drop a reel on the feed just for the pure, unscripted fun of it.

So today, we’re taking a detour from the polished programming. Throwing it back to 2022 in Lexington and 2023 in Concord, featuring a 3- and 4-year-old Arielle who was entirely committed to her role as a fiercely adorable Patriot soldier. History never looked so fabulous.

(A quick disclaimer before you turn the sound up: as much as it sounds like she’s passionately screaming “The bridges are coming!,” she is, in fact, warning us about the British. Context is everything, darlings. 🤺)

It’s a little raw, incredibly silly, and exactly the kind of offbeat memory that makes this whole motherhood gig the ultimate adventure. I am already plotting the exact moment I can wrangle Aurora into this very same uniform to reenact the reenactment.

Raise a glass to the history, the beautiful chaos, and the hilarious little moments in between! 🥂🗽
