I know I mentioned this in the Gift Guide, but I started watching holiday movies the day after Halloween. I usually wait until Thanksgiving week to get into the spirit, but I think this year we need a little cheer more than ever. And with so many options out there (Hallmark holiday movies have taken up about 75% of my attention this season), you’re pretty much guaranteed never to run out of seasonal entertainment. Here are just a few of my favorite holiday films and where you can stream them for free:
Netflix
The popular streaming service really served up Christmas this year with a slew of new Netflix Christmas movies – and even a series.
Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey
I can’t say enough about this inventive and inspiring new Christmas movie. It’s an instant classic!
Not a movie, but a series filled with scenes of NYC at Christmastime. By the way, I relate to Lily on so many levels, but that’s another story.
This 2019 Netflix holiday movie makes me want to take a safari.
A song and dance feast for the eyes and ears. If you haven’t watched this feel good 1954 holiday mainstay, do yourself a favor and check it out tonight.
Amazon Prime
I’m noticing that more and more of the films and shows I want to watch on Amazon Prime have a fee (see below) but at least one of my all-time favorites is still free!
We’ve visited the Brattle Theatre almost every December to watch this classic holiday movie. But this year we’ll be skipping the tradition and watching it from the safety of our couch.
Disney+
Disney knows how to do Christmas and all year long you’ll find holiday movies on Disney+. I could go on and on about all the Christmas specials that they do, but here are my favorite Disney Holiday movies:
The Nightmare Before Christmas
It has Christmas right in the title, so it is a Christmas film.
Arguably the best version ever made of A Christmas Carol. Ever.
A quirky tale, but full of heart and the talented Anna Kendrick.
Here are a few other favorites that you’ll have to pay to watch this holiday season (unless you have the DVD, like me!)
The Holiday ($2.99 to rent on Amazon Prime)
Love Actually ($3.99 to rent on Amazon Prime) – the most heartbreaking and romantic holiday movie of all time.
Elf ($3.99 to rent on Amazon Prime)
Settling in for a festive film can help us all to escape the holiday rush. What are some of your favorite holiday movies?
