I know I’ve shared lots of tips and tricks for planning your next vacation, including packing essentials for families, women, and those traveling with toddlers. But if you’re traveling internationally there is one crucial item that you need to have and if you don’t, you’re not going anywhere. A passport! So if you have a dream international vacation coming up quickly, and you don’t have this important documentation you need to move it! Here is how to get a passport FAST!
How to Apply for a Passport
Right now, the application process for a passport can take up to 11 weeks. However, that can change so make sure you check the U.S. State Department website for the most up-to-date information. If your passport is undamaged, was issued in the last 15 years (and you were 16 or older when it was issued), and shows your current name or you have documentation of your name change, you can renew your passport by mail. If you don’t meet those conditions and need a new passport, you’ll have to apply in person.
You will need a passport photo (2 copies) that is in color and meets the following criteria:
- Taken in last 6 months
- Uses a clear image of your face. Do not use filters commonly used on social media.
- Have someone else take your photo. No selfies.
- Take off your eyeglasses for your photo.
- Use a plain white or off-white background.
If you are applying and not renewing your passport, you can find the full details about necessary documentation on the State Department website. Once you have submitted your application and the required fee, ($130 for those 16 and over, $100 for those 15 and younger), you can track your application status online.
How to Expedite the Passport Application Process
If you need to get your passport ASAP, within 3 days, you can visit a passport agency or center. However, appointments are only granted for specific situations such as family emergencies, illness or death. If this is the case, you can call to make an appointment for life-or-death emergency service.
If you are not dealing with a life or death situation, it is hard to get one of these urgent travel appointments. Your best bet is to pay an extra $60 to expedite your passport application through the State Department if your travel date is in five to seven weeks. Yes, that isn’t terribly fast, but it could mean the difference between being able to take that vacation you already had booked before you realized your passport expired, or not being able to go. If you go this route, purchase USPS Priority Mail Express for faster turnaround and shipping.
One final tip . . .
While it is possible to get your passport last minute, it is always best to set a calendar reminder for nine months before the expiration of your current valid passport. Or if you don’t already have a passport, apply for one at least three months before your next international trip. This will help you to avoid the stress of the last-minute rush and the extra fee for expediting your passport.
