I love packing. I find so much joy in picking out outfits and imagining the days abroad that I’ll be wearing them. After traveling extensively, I’ve gotten pretty good at knowing just what to pack without going overboard (though Alex may argue otherwise). But packing for a toddler is an entirely different ballgame as I quickly learned. Here are 5 tips for how to pack for a weekend away with a toddler.
Always Bring More Than You Think You’ll Need
This rule applies to everything including, but not limited to, clothes, pajamas, diapers, wipes, cups, face masks and any medicines they may take. While I brought enough clothing for Arielle that would last me a week, she almost wore everything in just two and a half days because she would dribble food down her front. We also had some very different activities planned like a nice lunch out and then tromping through the pastures to meet the cows. My advice? Pick out what you think will take them through the trip and then add a couple extra outfits and pairs of pajamas.
Layers are Key
Weather can always change and don’t forget about A/C or heaters when you go inside. Even when traveling in the summer, bring a hoodie and a light jacket, to throw on over their outfits, just like you would plan for yourself.
A Fluffy Friend Can Save the Day
If your child has a fluffy friend or a favorite blanket, make sure to bring it with you. Sometimes that little reminder of home can soothe any meltdowns or tantrums. Also, don’t let it out of your sight. My favorite stuffed animal, Puppy (yes, I am very original with the name), once got lost in the laundry at Walt Disney World and it took a few days for him to be recovered.
Snacks are Sometimes Your Best Bet
Arielle has been going through a phase where she refuses to get into her car seat. Sometimes handing her keys or your phone can work, but other times I’ve had to bribe her with one of her favorite snacks. They are also really helpful when you’re on the road and in between stops. Extra water is also extremely important so you can refill their cup.
Bring a Book
A book is not only a great way to educate your toddler, it’s also a wonderful way to entertain them. I try to always have a book on long road trips in case Arielle gets antsy. Sometimes it’s the only way to keep her from climbing out of her high chair! So pack a book or two and I promise you’ll use them for more than just bedtime. Bonus points if you can find a book that is about your destination!
