It’s been so long since I’ve gone on a real vacation and while I like to think I’m an expert on packing (or over packing as Alex would call it), I feel like especially in this current atmosphere I needed a refresher on how to stay healthy when traveling. So here are some suggestions for how to keep jet lag and the sniffles at bay on even the biggest adventure.
1. Wear a mask
This should be a no-brainer at this point but if you are using any type of public transportation (subway, bus, train and plane included) you should be wearing a mask over your nose and face as much as possible. Also, check your destinations about their mask mandates so you don’t get caught without the proper coverage.
2. Keep your vaccinations up to date
This should be another no-brainer but check with your final destination what they require for vaccinations and proof of vaccination prior to your departure.
3. Avoid aisle seats on planes
It’s funny because even though I know I always have to use the bathroom on flights if it’s available I always book the window seat. I just feel more protected and I guess I am on to something. The CDC did a study on this and they found people who sat in aisle seats were more likely to be exposed to germs.
4. Breathe
If you’re a nervous flyer or you just get anxious when you’re visiting somewhere new, taking a moment to breathe deeply can help you to calm your nerves.
5. Hydrate throughout your vacation and watch what you eat and drink
I remember getting so sick on the top of a double-decker bus tour in London during my first European adventure because I had forgotten to drink water almost the entire day before (our travel day). I never made that mistake again. That being said, make sure to check the safety of the tap water where you are visiting. I know in Mexico we were only allowed to drink bottled water and didn’t even have ice in our drinks. Similarly, be sure to consume foods that are prepared properly.
6. Get those Zzzzs in
While it can be tempting to get up super early and stay out as late as possible to get the most out of a vacation, this can be very disruptive to your circadian rhythm, and that’s on top of crossing time zones. All of this can compromise your immune system and that means you will probably get sick on that amazing vacation you planned. If you can slowly shift your bedtime and wake-up alarm to that of your destinations prior to your trip, you will find it much easier to deal with the time difference.
7. Pack a First-Aid Kit that includes Sunscreen
You can pick up a basic first-aid kit at your local drug store and then load it up with pain medicines, antibacterial wipes, Dramamine, and other necessities. One of those necessities should be sunscreen and you should be applying it every day to protect your skin, no matter the weather.
