I am a shopaholic. So much so, that I’ve been known to sort of blackout when I go on a spending spree. But there are a few shopping trips that I remember very well and most of them took place in thrift or consignment stores. That’s because there is gold to be found at these second-hand stores. And sometimes, if you’re lucky, you will find an amazing deal. Like the time I paid $50 for a Valentino camel wool cape that originally sold for well over $1,200. Or when I bought a white boucle cowl neck Max Mara coat (pictured here) at Modern Millie’s for $200 that had gone for almost $3,000. Here are four tips on how to thrift shop like a pro.
Shop Seasonally
The change in seasons, specifically spring and winter, are the best times to go thrift shopping because that’s when people are cleaning out their closets and you’ll score some amazing finds. It’s also when the stores have the most inventory so be prepared to do some digging.
Look for the Hidden Gems
While it can be tempting to grab a white Gap button-down for $3 or a pair of Old Navy jeans for $6, I prefer to look for the hidden gems like a vintage 1960s canary yellow off-the-shoulder dress I found at The Garment District that I wore to my cousin’s wedding a few years ago and is still in incredible shape. It’s great to have staples, but you need to recognize the quality of the items you buy rather than trying to nab a ton of pieces for cheap. If you’re operating on a budget, save it for the items that make you go, “wow!”
Size Doesn’t (Always) Matter
Especially when you’re shopping vintage, sizing can be a bit confusing. I was a size 0 to 2 in dresses when I purchased the 1960s canary yellow dress in a size 6 and I found it to be a bit tight on the hips. Be prepared to try things on, and be prepared to have to do it in the aisles as many thrift stores do not have dressing rooms. If you find something you love and it’s on the larger side, you can have it tailored to fit you. As a petite woman that is fashion-focused, I have learned that tailoring is always an option!
Do Your Research
As with any store, some thrift shops are better than others. I usually find the most well-stocked stores to be in the city (I’m a fan of many thrift stores in Boston and New York City), or in affluent areas. When Madam Had’em had their location in Marblehead, I would often stopover during a trip to Salem to check out their latest acquisitions. That’s how I found two pairs of Louboutins in almost perfect condition for $100 per pair! This summer I’m hoping to check out their Manchester-by-the-Sea store in hopes of recreating this success.
