Another week, another travel guide, and this time we’re going to Peterborough, NH. Home to Grover’s Corners, this quaint New Hampshire town was actually the inspiration for Thornton Wilder’s 1938 play, “Our Town.” At about an hour and a half away from Boston, Peterborough is the perfect day trip for those looking for food and fun while avoiding the crowds of other artistic escapes like Portsmouth, NH. Here is my travel guide to Peterborough, NH.
When to Go
My uncle lives less than 10 minutes away from Peterborough so I’ve seen it in all four seasons. While it is beautiful covered in a dusting of snow, more shops and restaurants seem to be open during spring, summer, and fall. So if you really want to dig into the local culture, I’d suggest visiting during the warmer months.
What to See
You have to take a picture under the Grover’s Corners street sign which is right near the entrance to the town’s main street. And while this town may seem tiny, it has a rich artistic history and you can discover it at both the The Monadnock Center for History & Culture and the Mariposa Museum & World Cultural Center.
Where to Shop
While I haven’t done a ton of shopping in Peterborough, I’ve stopped into some of the local stores and the Toadstool Bookshop & Cafe is absolutely charming. Joseph’s Coat is a treasure trove of handmade gifts. Grove & Main Antiques is full of unique finds and refinished pieces while Bowerbird & Friends Antiques has several different “shops” within the same space where you can buy everything from vintage bottles to bed frames.

Where to Eat
For being such a small town, Peterborough has many dining options though Covid has forced many establishments to restrict hours, offerings or staff which has made it difficult for the local scene. But if you go at the right time, you’ll have your pick of Harlow’s Pub, an eclectic eatery, Nonie’s, you’re more traditional meat and potatoes spot, creative cuisine with a view at Waterhouse Restaurant & Bar, sandwiches or salads from Twelve Pine Cafe, or the classic Peterborough Diner. Post & Beam Brewery serves up great beer and bar bites in Peterborough’s former G.A.R. Hall. And if you’re in the mood for a sweet treat, head to Sweet! Macaron. I really loved the French toast macaron.
