I’ve already shared all about our stay at the Trapp Family Lodge. This beautiful resort is located on the side of a mountain and it’s only a seven or eight-minute drive into the center of Stowe, Vermont. I have heard so many amazing things about this tiny little town and, let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint. Here is my travel guide to Stowe, VT.
When to Go
While Stowe may seem like a winter destination, it is really lovely in the summer and can only imagine the incredible foliage it has in fall. We probably won’t be able to get up there this season, since it is almost three hours from us (and we live just north of Boston), but I think I’m going to have to plan a trip for fall 2022.
What to See
Because we were stopping on the way out of town, we stayed to the Main Street but did venture down to the library where they had art exhibitions on the lawn. Above the building was written, “Come celebrate with me that every day something has tried to kill me and has failed,” from a poem by Lucille Clifton. There are some fantastic mountain views from the street and in the wintertime skiing is a huge draw.
Where to Shop
The downtown is full of adorable little shops and boutiques. My favorite was the Stowe Mercantile because it was filled with delicious fudge, candy and jams – three of my favorite foods! At the Mercantile you’ll also find plenty of maple products, souvenirs, housewares and clothes. While you’re there, you can play a tune on the store’s piano or pose with the vintage ski lift!
I also loved The Country Store on Main. This Instagram-worthy shop is the place to find unique kitchen ware, luxe bedding, handmade soaps and toys. We got a kick out of Shaw’s General Store, one of the largest storefronts in town. Not only does the store stock great hiking wear and shoes, you can find souvenirs and gag gifts for the folks at home. They also have a piece of movie memorabilia: a sled that Alan Alda used in the 1981 film, “The Four Seasons,” is hanging up on one of the store’s walls.
Where to Eat
We enjoyed sandwiches at Cafe on Main in the same building as the Stowe Mercantile. Arielle particularly loved her grilled cheese and kicking it with the life-size teddy bear. But there are several other options including the Stowe Public House and Idletyme Brewing Co. Or you can head up the hill to the Trapp Family Lodge to check out the Bierhall or Kaffehaus. We also enjoyed a great cup of coffee at Black Cap. If you’re in the mood for a sweet treat (if you haven’t had your fill at the Stowe Mercantile), check out Stowe Sweets for an ice cream cone.
As for where to stay, my vote would be for the Trapp Family Lodge which I mentioned is just a short drive from the center of Stowe.
