What We’ve Been Loving Lately (February Edition)

February 28, 2022

lifestyle-motherhood-blogger

Welcome to our new series – What We’ve Been Loving Lately! This is the first installment of what will be a monthly wrap up of some of the things we’ve been into over the past few weeks. I’ve asked Arielle to make a little contribution to this post and she definitely came through. So, here’s what we’ve been loving lately …

The Return of Sparkle

After two years in sweats, I am ready for a little sparkle in my life. That doesn’t necessarily mean I’m running out to any fancy dinner parties just yet, but I have been pulling out some of my glitzier accessories, thanks to Arielle. The other morning when we were getting ready for breakfast out Arielle went rummaging through my armoire to pull out a pink rhinestone necklace.

“Be a princess, Mama!” she told me as she placed it in my hands. So I changed my outfit to better match the necklace and I felt very pretty sitting in our local diner as we split an order of chocolate chip pancakes.

Arielle’s Newfound Obsession with Princess Culture

This brings me to what Arielle’s been loving lately. We had given her a set of princess dolls for Christmas to go with the castle that Santa gifted her and she loves to walk them up and down the stairs and brush their hair. But I think that the idea of dressing up and “being a princess” clicked when she watched me getting dressed for our Valentine’s date a few weeks ago. Now anytime we leave the house Arielle wants me to “be a princess” and will help me to pick out my outfits and accessories. While I am not encouraging the Damsel in Distress scenario, I do love her confidence and interest in fashion.

The Gilded Age

If you havn’t started watching this show yet, where have you been? While I was a bit skeptical that this New York set historical drama would be able to live up to the hype,  I believe that Julian Fellowes has done it again with The Gilded Age. Not only do I love seeing some of my favorite Broadway stars on the small screen, I enjoy playing “spot the location” because many of the scenes play out in the halls and rooms of the Newport Mansions which we had visited in December. Because we are forced to watch it in the more traditional way (one episode is dropped on HBOMax every Monday at 9 p.m.), I’ve found myself binging Downton Abbey just to get my fix of opulence and drama rolled into one.

Wordle

Bringing it back to the more practical, Wordle has got everyone I know practicing their 5-letter word vocabulary. And after two years and a half years of mostly discussing Arielle, then the pandemic, it’s fun for Alex and I to share this little project every day. I just hope that its recent acquisition by the New York Times won’t end our fun!

What I Bought in February

Because I seem to have become steeped in Gilded Age history and I love all things mystical, of course I had to pick up The Witches of New York by Ami McKay. I haven’t started it yet but it’s on my bedside table ready for after I finish rereading Bringing up Bébé. We also reordered our favorite shampoo (it lasts forever and feels so luxe)  and replaced our cookie sheets after years of wear and tear. Arielle is in love with her new Minnie dress from Target and I got her these cute ballet flats in anticipation of Easter.

So what have you been loving lately? I’d love it if you’d email or DM me your recommendations.

What it’s Like to Have a Miscarriage

“You’ll never do a whole lot unless you’re brave e “You’ll never do a whole lot unless you’re brave enough to try.” — Dolly Parton ✨

When you grow up navigating risky situations caused by other people’s choices, playing it safe as an adult feels like armor. For a long time, keeping things small, controlled, and predictable was how I protected my peace.

The catch? Playing it safe meant I started missing out on my own life.

I’d draft the post and let it sit in my archive because I was terrified it would bomb. I’d write the pitch and never hit send because the fear of hearing “no” felt louder than the thrill of hearing “yes.”

A while back, I framed this Dolly quote and put it right on my desk where I couldn’t ignore it. Every single day, it’s there staring back at me—a sparkling reminder that staying small doesn’t keep you safe; it just keeps you stuck.

Lately, I’ve felt that shift. I’ve noticed myself hitting send anyway. Pitching bigger. Showing up bolder. Getting braver, one imperfect step at a time.

So thank you, Dolly, for the rhinestones, the unmatched wisdom, and for letting your light shine so unapologetically that you give the rest of us permission to do the same.

Here’s to living every day just a little bit braver. What’s one brave move you’ve been waiting to make? Take this as your sign to just go for it. 💖🥂

You can’t put an outfit this good next to a bowl o You can’t put an outfit this good next to a bowl of soggy flakes. It’s practically a crime against fashion.

We took our new Old Navy threads out for a spin this morning and upgraded the school run with a mandatory French bakery detour.

Because starting the day with chic layers, cool sneakers, and a pain au chocolat is exactly the kind of unapologetic energy we are bringing to this school year. ☕️✌️

A very New York kind of magic. ✨ One minute we’re A very New York kind of magic. ✨

One minute we’re admiring the diamonds at the AMNH, where I am quietly debating if a 500-carat sapphire pairs best with pearls or my leather jacket, and the next, Aurora is blinking awake in her carriage to the sound of dozens of strangers belting out a classic at Strawberry Fields. 🥂

Honestly, slipping into a daydream when you are surrounded by that much unapologetic sparkle is practically a rite of passage—even for a little one catching a nap on the go. But rolling the stroller out into the fresh air for a spontaneous park-bench chorus? That is exactly the kind of city magic you just can’t plan.

Throw on your comfiest heels, grab an espresso, and let the city completely rewrite your family itinerary today. You never know where the detour will take you. 🚕 🍎

102 floors up, and right now, it truly feels like 102 floors up, and right now, it truly feels like we have the world at our feet. ✨

Celebrating 12 years in the very city where we got engaged—and where my own NYC story started—is pure magic. Watching our two girls thrive and fall completely in love with the city makes this milestone that much sweeter.

But let’s be unapologetically real for a second: marriage isn’t just about these glittering, top-of-the-world high notes. It’s about the grit behind the glam. It’s how you show up as an absolute team when the view isn’t so pretty, relying on each other through the tough, messy seasons that take real work.

Through the sky-high moments and the days that require all the hustle and heart we’ve got, there is absolutely no one else I’d rather navigate it all with.

Happy 12 years, Alex. Here’s to the climb, the view, and our beautiful, wonderful life together. 🥂🗽🖤

The only acceptable reason for a pre-dawn wake-up The only acceptable reason for a pre-dawn wake-up call. 🚕🥂🏙️

We are officially trading the quiet morning routine for the absolute magic and beautiful chaos of Manhattan! I wanted to start this trip off with a little bit of mystery, so before the girls even opened their eyes, the clues were waiting for them. There is nothing quite like that split-second realization when they figure out we are heading to the city.

The bags are packed, the sneakers are laced, and we are ready to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Do you surprise your kids for trips, or do they help you count down the days? Let me know below! 👇

This is 40.🥂✨ For as long as I can remember, I ha This is 40.🥂✨

For as long as I can remember, I had this recurring dream. I’d be a little girl, sitting in front of a mirror, watching myself age. And right before I hit my 40th birthday, I would just… disappear. For years, I carried this quiet, nagging fear that my story was supposed to end before this decade even began.

But plot twist: I didn’t fade out. I just finally found my lighting.

I am officially 40, and I’m living a life I never could have scripted, let alone expected to love this much. I’m married to Alex—the wonderful guy I took to my senior prom, who I’ve been with for 20 years (married for almost 12!), and who I’ve been crushing on since I was even younger than Arielle. I’m raising the most amazing, insightful, and beautiful little girls who challenge me in the absolute best ways every single day.

I am completely in love with our beautiful, crazy chaos. I get to hustle at multiple jobs entirely on my own schedule, collaborate with dream brands in ways I never imagined, and bring my favorite people along for the ride.

Today was delightfully chill by design. But behind the scenes, I am deep in planning mode for a once-in-a-lifetime trip where everything is aligning perfectly, and I get to work with globally known brands and iconic landmarks.

I had a little revelation in the shower last week (I’ll share the full story soon), but to sum up exactly how I’m feeling right now: these last 40 years have been an incredibly wild, beautiful adventure. But with everything unfolding for me lately, I have this undeniable feeling that it was all just dress rehearsal.

The main act is just getting started. Watch out world—I’m coming for you. 🖤🍾
