Every year we visit Russell Orchards for apple cider doughnuts and to see the animals. We always have such a great time and this year was no different. Just like I’ve been doing since I was a little one, we paid our yearly visit to this beautiful New England farm and enjoyed our seasonal treats. But it got me thinking about where else we could find delicious fall fun. Here is a guide of where to find the best apple cider doughnuts North of Boston.
Note: I won’t be ranking the doughnuts, per se, but sharing what each farm has to offer. Make sure to read until the end to find out my favorite doughnut overall!
Best Traditional Apple Cider Doughnut
Russell Orchards
Ipswich, Massachusetts
This family-run orchard is so idyllic and if it’s a warmer day you can also visit Crane’s Beach since it is right down the street! Russell Orchard’s doughnuts are best served warm, so either ask for a fresh batch or wait until you’re home and you can throw it in the microwave for 10 seconds before you enjoy it. You’ll also find gluten-free options here.
My favorite treat at Russell Orchards is their apple cider doughnut Sundae but they haven’t had it since COVID started. And I love their apple cider. I think it is the best in the area … but that’s a whole other post that I might save for next year.
Most Sugary Apple Cider Doughnut
Wilson Farm
Lexington, Massachusetts
One of the baristas at my local coffee shop told me about Wilson Farm and next time I see him I will definitely be thanking him. I loved how sugary the doughnuts were and, unlike Russell’s, these don’t need to be warm to be enjoyed. While it doesn’t have the extensive grounds like the other farms I’ve listed here, it does have an incredible farm stand that is more like a gourmet grocery store. You can find designer cakes, delicious cold brew coffee, and a ton of gluten-free options.
Most Cake-y Apple Cider Doughnut
Brooksby Farm
Peabody, Massachusetts
If you prefer a cake-like doughnut, Brooksby Farm is your best bet. When we were there they did not have any sugar-covered doughnuts, but if you go earlier in the day you’ll probably be able to nab a few. The farm also offers plenty of pick-your-own fruit options and a chance for kids to meet the farm animals and conquer a farm-themed playground.
Best Overall Apple Cider Doughnut
Cider Hill Farm
Amesbury, Massachusetts
I think Cider Hill Farm was the biggest surprise of the season. Not only were the doughnuts my absolute favorite – the perfect density, just the right amount of sugar, delicious warm or at room temperature – they also had a beautiful fall display and a well-stocked farm stand with unique gourmet items. Arielle loved wandering through the pumpkins. You can pick your own apples and they have plenty of fun activities for kids. Next time I visit I want to try a sip of their hard cider and check out the live music they have on select weekends.
As for price, a half dozen at each location cost about $5. So it all comes down to the experience and what you prefer in a doughnut.
