This is always a tough time of year, fashion-wise, for me. I tend to run cold so while many people are already breaking out the skirts and short sleeves, I’m still in jeans and sweaters. But I hate looking like I’m stuck in a winter-rut as the flowers start to bloom. So I’ve learned to master the winter-to-spring wardrobe transition by relying on five sartorial staples.
The Trench Coat
My mom got me my first real, classic trench coat when I started journalism school and I’ve kept one in my closet ever since. They are great for everything from running errands, to heading to a business meeting, to attending an event (yes, those will happen again someday). They’re just so sharp and these days you can get them in any color, print or cut.
The Light Scarf
Not only does a light scarf protect your neck from a chilly breeze, or your hair from the wind, it’s an opportunity to make a statement. And I just love an accessory that is both functional and fun.
The Fashionable Sneaker
I’ll be honest, before becoming a mom I believed that “sneakers” and “fashionable” did not belong in the same sentence unless connected by “are not.” But as Arielle has become more and more mobile, I’ve had to adjust my choice of footwear.
I believe that luxury is an attitude, so I went on the hunt for a stylish pair of kicks and found these from Cole Haan. They’re sold out but I found a few comparable options here, here and here. Why I like a sneaker more than a flat is because you can wear a sock with it, giving you that extra layer of warmth.
The Spring Sweater
A cotton sweater is the perfect transitional piece. It’s warm but allows the skin to breath. You know those mornings that start out really chilly but then the days warm up to 50s, even 60 degrees? That’s when I love to wear this Everlane cotton sweater. It’s another staple that can be worn out and about or for your next zoom meeting.
The Neutral Crossbody
Since hats and gloves are no longer necessary, I usually put away the large black leather tote bag and break out the neutral crossbody. My current favorite is my beige Saint Laurent Lou Camera Bag. However, if you know of a medium-sized crossbody that can fit a wallet, keys, sunglasses AND a sippy cup, I’m all ears!
