Salem in October. The very words conjure images of cobblestone streets, flickering lanterns, and a delicious, spooky energy in the autumn air. But navigating the Witch City with little ones in tow? It can feel more daunting than a chat with the Sanderson Sisters.
Fear not, darling.
While Salem is the Halloween capital of the world, it’s not just for the hardcore haunting crowd. There’s a whole world of enchanting, spellbinding, and utterly kid-friendly magic waiting to be discovered. So, grab your little ghouls and goblins, and let’s explore the chicest, most spooktacular family-friendly spots in Salem. (You can read more about many of these spots in my Salem 3-Day Kid-Friendly Itinerary!)

Professor Spindlewink’s
This is, without a doubt, one of our absolute favorites. Professor Spindlewink’s isn’t just something you watch; it’s an interactive experience that pulls the kids right into the story. Arielle has done it a few times, and the wide-eyed wonder never, ever gets old. It’s pure magic and the perfect way to kick off a family adventure in Salem.

The Good Witch of Salem
Step into the prettiest, most whimsical corner of Salem! At The Good Witch, your little one can create their own bubbling potion, design a custom witch’s hat, or even undergo a Magical Transformation. The shop hosts the most darling events and has recently opened a new spell studio we can’t wait to visit! It’s become a tradition for us—Arielle simply has to take a peek inside every time we’re in town.

Real Pirates Salem
For your little swashbucklers, this is a must-see. Real Pirates Salem is a museum dedicated to the wreck of the pirate ship Whydah, discovered off the coast of Cape Cod. The coolest part? They can touch real pirate treasure. Yes, you read that right—they actually encourage the kids to touch it! It’s a thrilling, hands-on piece of history that will captivate everyone.

Salem Kids Slightly Spooky Tour
Forget dry, boring historical tours. The Salem Kids Slightly Spooky Tour was an absolute dream! What’s their secret? All the guides are teachers, so they know exactly how to keep children engaged and entertained. We had the wonderful Miss Alicia, who is not only the owner of the company but also a Middle School History Teacher who has lived in Salem for 25 years. We knew we were in the best possible hands for a tour that was more delightful than frightful.

The Halloween Museum
Fun for the whole family, guaranteed! The Halloween Museum is a vibrant, day-glo-coated trip through the holiday’s fascinating history. It’s filled with incredible vignettes of Salem’s spooky past, plus memorabilia from the season and iconic Halloween films. It’s a visual feast and a fun, lighthearted way to get into the spirit of things.

The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM)
Now, you might see “museum” and think it’s a no-go for energetic little ones, but trust me on this. The PEM is brilliant for families. They constantly have new, rotating exhibits, and many are incredibly interactive and designed with kids in mind. It’s a perfect dose of culture and a fantastic way to spend an afternoon.

Take a Trolley Tour
After a few hours of walking those historic streets, little feet (and let’s be honest, our feet) will be tired. The Salem Trolley Tour is a welcome respite and one of the best ways to see the entire city without a single complaint. Hop on, sit back, and enjoy the charming views.

Mahi Cruises Salem
See the Witch City from a different perspective! Mahi Cruises offers several themed boat tours right out of Salem Harbor, and they operate through November 1st. It’s another fabulous way to see the sights while resting your feet. And the best part for moms? Yes, you can take your stroller aboard!

A Hocus Pocus Pilgrimage
You can’t visit Salem in October without paying homage to the Sanderson Sisters. It’s an unwritten rule. You can join a formal tour or create your own DIY adventure to see the iconic film sites. For all the details on where to find Max and Dani’s house, Allison’s mansion, and the Old Town Hall, check out my full Hocus Pocus Filming Locations Blog Post here and my Instagram Guide here!

It’s no secret that Salem holds a special kind of magic for our family, and it has quickly become one of my absolute favorite cities to explore and write about, no matter the season. From spooky season guides to stylish stays (check out our reviews on The Coach House and The Salem Waterfront Hotel) and hidden gems, there’s always a new adventure waiting around the corner.
And while it can be a lot of work to plan, if you know how to plan it out right, it can be a lot of fun! For everything you should know about traveling to Salem in October, click here.
