Our Wedding Album

Salem, Massachusetts

August 30, 2020

As we were celebrating our 6th wedding anniversary a few weeks ago I thought about how life changes so quickly. Six years ago I was working as a TV producer and Alex was still working for MassDOT. We had only been in our home for two years and still had so much work to do (though to be quite honest, even with everything we’ve done we still have a lot of work ahead of us – home renovations are the never-ending project!).

We hadn’t yet been to Paris and Amsterdam, cities that have made a huge impact on my life. I hadn’t taken my mom to Iceland or bathed in the Blue Lagoon. The biggest change of course being that we didn’t have Arielle and I can’t even imagine life without her anymore.

I also hadn’t started Fashionably Kate & Co. and so I never posted any pictures of our 1920’s inspired wedding with the exception of the occasional Instagram or Facebook shot. So I am sharing our wedding album and some of my favorite memories of our special day with you now.

We had a beautiful day on August 16, 2014. The weather was sunny and in the high 70s with no humidity. The night before we had stayed at The Hawthorne Hotel, right down the street from both the church and our venue.

The morning of the wedding my mom treated my sister and me to breakfast and mimosas as we got ready in our suite, enjoying some time together.

During the prep time, Alex and I had our Maid of Honor and Best Man deliver special notes that we had written to each other. We still have them in our memory box with the rest of our wedding cards.

We had decided we wouldn’t do a “first look” but had a sweet moment right before it was time to leave.

What I hadn’t anticipated was how hard it would be to bustle my dress for the short ride to the church. Because of this, I ended up being almost half an hour late to the wedding, something our officiant, my former boss at CTV, has never let me forget.

I’ve always wanted to walk down the aisle on my own and I never felt uncomfortable with this decision. After Lindsay, my college roommate, finished singing Ave Maria and both my mom and sister had taken their positions at the front of the church, it was my turn. Making my way towards the altar I felt so at ease and so confident.

I’m not going to lie, after we heard Bishop Reed declare us husband and wife the rest of the day passed in a whirlwind. We had pictures taken out on Salem Common and then at the Custom House right on the Salem Waterfront, all the while our guests were ferried around town on a Trolley Tour of Witch City.

Once the pictures were over it was time to party! Cocktails and a selection of hors d’ouvres were passed around as our guests enjoyed the beauty of Colonial Hall.

We shared our first dance to Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” It may have seemed an odd choice to those who don’t know our back story, but the song holds a special memory for us. It’s the song that Alex sang to me as we danced at my prom. Yes, I married my prom date!

My mom and I also shared a mother-daughter dance to another special song in my life, Phil Collins’ “You’ll be in my Heart.”

Our family and friends definitely enjoyed our art deco wedding cake, filled with lemon and raspberry preserves, as well as the chocolate heart my Nunny had given to us.

We danced the night away to the sound of Britannica (a few family members may have jumped in to help entertain the crowds).

At the end of the night we were so exhausted and yet, I felt like I was walking on air. The day truly couldn’t have been more perfect. And though I’d never really thought about what my wedding would be like when I was a little girl, it was everything I could have dreamed of and so much more.

The past six years have had their ups and downs, but one thing has stayed constant and that is the love we share. And it’s so wonderful to see that love continue in our little girl.

What it’s Like to Have a Miscarriage

This week Boston was plunged headfirst into a cine This week Boston was plunged headfirst into a cinematic whirlwind of devastatingly beautiful tragedy! ✨

The Boston premiere of Jean-Christophe Maillot’s (@jeanladanse) Roméo et Juliette at the @bostonballet was… well, let’s just say I came, I saw, I sobbed.

I’ll be the first to confess, my ballet heart usually beats for the elaborate tutus of The Nutcracker or the ethereal grace of Swan Lake. So, walking into this re-imagined classic, told through the haunted eyes of Friar Laurence (a superb @paulcraig2003), I had a tiny flutter of stylish apprehension. But by the time that infamous death scene unfolded, I was a complete, utter, mascara-streaked mess. In the best possible way, of course. This isn’t just ballet; it’s an experience. The minimalistic sets are pure genius, letting the raw, unfiltered passion of the dancers blaze across the stage. We’re talking pride, fear, the dizzying rush of new love, and the devastating impulsiveness that follows – you don’t just watch it, you feel it in your soul. It’s so cinematic, even the dancers’ names projected onto a scrim at the start felt like opening film credits.

@JeffreyCirio as Romeo and Ji Young Chae @dancechae as Juliette are simply breathtaking. I’ve seen them paired many times, and they always enchant, but in this? It’s like they’re two halves of the same soul – you can’t tell where one ends and the other begins. Their connection is pure fire.

And can we talk about the slow-motion fight scene?! The culmination of all that simmering violence, where Mercutio and Tybalt meet their fates (minor spoiler for the .2% of you who missed English Lit 😜) – was one of the most astounding feats of theatre I have ever witnessed. An entire stage of dancers moving in perfect, heart-stopping slow-motion unison? Utterly spellbinding.

What an absolutely magnificent way for @bostonballet to close their season. Don’t walk, jeté to get your tickets for Roméo et Juliette before June 8th! And because I love you, darlings, use my code FASHIONKATE45 for a fabulous little discount. You absolutely must experience this.

Well, the cap has been tossed and the diploma is i Well, the cap has been tossed and the diploma is in hand. Arielle is officially a preschool graduate! 🎓

To say I’m proud would be the understatement of the century. For the last three years, we have been so incredibly lucky to be part of a school community that didn’t just teach her letters and numbers, but celebrated her for exactly who she is. They saw her fire, her humor, and her unique spirit not as something to be managed, but as an asset. They let her shine.

It’s everything you could ever want for your child, isn’t it? So often, the world seems eager for our kids to talk and walk, only to then spend years telling them to sit down and be quiet. My hope for her next chapter is that she lands in a place that continues to nurture her spirit.

And I’ll be honest, after the graduation was over and the house was quiet this afternoon, I cried. Some might think it’s silly to cry over a preschool graduation, but it’s a real step. For me, Arielle is my mini-me, and I know all too well what it feels like to have your light dimmed by people who don’t understand you. So yes, there were tears. Tears of pride for the amazing little human she is, tears of excitement for her future, and tears of nervousness for what’s to come.

Feeling all the feelings today. Swipe to see my sweet, smart, incredible graduate. ❤️

Okay, darlings, what a weekend this has been! My h Okay, darlings, what a weekend this has been! My heart is just soaring after watching my amazing Arielle shine.

Seriously, Arielle was just incredible at her dance recital! ✨

Her ballet was so graceful and sweet, and her tap performance was pure energy and fun – I couldn’t stop smiling. Seeing her up on that stage, so confident and happy, was truly one of those perfect mom moments.

It definitely brought back so many memories of my own dancing days. I loved performing, but I also remember dealing with some mean-spiritedness back then, and I’m so determined to make sure Arielle’s experience is different. I really think we’ve found such a wonderfully supportive and kind dance studio for her. It feels like a true dance home, and that means the world to me.

And hold onto your hats, because the dance adventure continues! My little Aurora was so captivated by Arielle’s performance (she was practically trying to climb onto the stage herself!), so I just had to sign her up for the 2-year-old class next year! 🎀

Oh my goodness, I can only imagine the adorable chaos, but I am so ready for it. Two tiny dancers in the house – get ready!

And as if that wasn’t enough excitement, after the recital, we celebrated Arielle graduating from preschool!

From her beautiful dances to her little graduation, it was a weekend packed with milestones and so much pride.

It’s been such an emotional and wonderful few days, a beautiful reminder of how quickly they grow and how important it is to soak in all these precious moments. So much joy, so much to look forward to! So incredibly proud of my girls. 💖

Darlings, a little heart-to-heart for Mental Healt Darlings, a little heart-to-heart for Mental Health Awareness Month? My soul sighed relief for this reminder. 🌸

With my therapist, I shared my ‘grand plan’: track every minute to find more time...for more doing! (Life’s a whirlwind with school events, Arielle’s graduation, birthdays, a trip – you know the beautiful chaos!) Bless my ever-striving heart. 😂

Her kind revelation: what if that ‘extra’ time was a gift to myself? My mind yelled, ‘But how, darling?! So much to do!’, but my heart whispered, ‘Yes.’

This led me to reflect on 2022’s tender wounds: two silent heartbreaks, goodbyes that marked my soul. Then, learning the shadow I carried was PPD (yes, even without a baby home then – a shock). Our precious Aurora Rose, our rainbow, arrived like a sunbeam. I hoped she’d mend everything, but true healing, I’m learning, is a gentle pilgrimage inward, even amidst her joy. ✨

I see now my whirlwind of ‘doing’ was often a dance to avoid unprocessed grief & depression. My ADHD is part of my sparkle, but it also shielded a heart not yet ready to be still and feel.

So this May, I’m tenderly rewriting ‘self-care.’ It’s more than appointments; it’s nurturing my inner landscape: a joyful novel, a quiet coffee, the radical act of being. Understanding that asking for help is strength. Am I giving my loved ones my best, or just what’s left from an empty cup?

My heartfelt desire: be a joyful, present mother, a loving partner, and kind to myself. It’s not a quick-fix, my loves, but a gentle journey home to myself, one heartfelt step at a time.

What tender acts of self-kindness are you embracing this month? I’d be so honored to hear your heart on this.
