Reflecting on 2024: A Year of Adventures, Growth, and Family Magic

January 2, 2025

niagara-falls

As 2024 draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on the incredible journey this year has been. From exploring new destinations and creating unforgettable memories with my family to navigating personal challenges and prioritizing my mental health, it’s been a year of both triumphs and tribulations.

Adventures Near and Far

Our travel adventures took us from the charming coastal towns of Mystic, Connecticut, and Nantucket, Massachusetts, to the historic Thousand Islands and the breathtaking beauty of Niagara Falls. We even ventured to the whimsical world of Chautauqua, New York, where we explored the legacy of Lucille Ball and immersed ourselves in nature.

Each destination offered unique experiences and opportunities to connect as a family. We explored aquariums and museums, set sail on pirate adventures, and even stepped back in time at historical reenactments. We savored delicious local cuisine, discovered hidden gems, and created memories that will last a lifetime.

Personal Growth and Healing

Beyond the travel highlights, 2024 was a year of significant personal growth and healing. The loss of my beloved Nunny in February, at the incredible age of 102 and a half, brought a wave of grief and reflection. While we cherished the time we had with her, her absence left a void that continues to remind us to live each day to the fullest.

This year also marked a turning point in my mental health journey. As I’ve opened up about my experiences with childhood trauma and postpartum depression, I’ve found strength in vulnerability and sought support through therapy. It’s been a challenging process, but I’m learning to prioritize my well-being, set boundaries, and ask for help when I need it.

Celebrating Milestones and Embracing Change

Amidst the challenges, there were also moments of pure joy and celebration. Arielle turned five, finished her second year of preschool, and dazzled us with her dance recital performance. She even started swim and skate lessons, and just recently we discovered that one of her teeth has come loose! Watching her grow and learn has been an incredible privilege.

Aurora, our youngest, turned one during a fun-filled trip to Storyland in New Hampshire. She took her first steps shortly after and is now officially a runner! Her vocabulary is exploding, and her vibrant personality shines brighter each day.

In August, we celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary with a family adventure in Niagara Falls. While it wasn’t the romantic getaway we might have envisioned a decade ago, exploring Clifton Hill and experiencing the magic of the falls together as a family was even more special.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As I look ahead to 2025, I’m filled with a sense of both excitement and anticipation. While my travel calendar is currently open, I’m eager to embrace new adventures and continue exploring the world with my family. Prioritizing my mental health remains a top priority, and I’m committed to nurturing my own well-being while guiding my daughters on their journey of self-discovery.

This year also brings a significant milestone: Arielle will be starting kindergarten! (Cue the tears! 😭) I can’t wait to witness this next chapter in her life and support her as she embarks on her educational journey.

How to tackle 250 years of history with kids in to How to tackle 250 years of history with kids in tow—without a single mid-1800s meltdown! ✨🕰️

Let’s be honest: taking kids to a sprawling, 200-acre outdoor museum can sound intimidating on paper. But our day exploring @oldsturbridgevillage was an absolute dream, and it turns out that 1830s New England charm is the ultimate antidote to modern screen fatigue.

With the entire nation celebrating America’s 250th anniversary this year, the village is buzzing with an electric, celebratory energy. Here is our family edit on how we made this living history leap a massive hit for the little ones—and an effortlessly cool day out for us:

✨ 1. Ditch the Grid, Let Them Lead: We threw out the rigid sightseeing schedule the second we crunched onto the gravel paths. Whether they wanted to spend twenty minutes asking the cobbler questions or follow a wandering flock of sheep, letting their natural curiosity set the pace was our secret weapon.
✨ 2. Zero in on the Sensory Magic: Kids learn by doing, seeing, and touching! We prioritized the high-action stops: the mesmerizing glow of the blacksmith’s hearth, the working farm animals, and the stagecoach rides.
✨ 3. Ride the 250th Wave: The 250th anniversary festivities are pure visual and auditory gold for children. The rhythmic fife and drum parades and lively historical reenactments captured their attention in a way a textbook never could! 🥁🇺🇸
✨ 4. Glam on the Gravel: Practicality is chic. We paired tailored layers with our most comfortable, heavy-rotation walking sneakers, packed plenty of snacks, and embraced the slow, unplugged pace of village life.

Watching the kids trade screen time for hands-on discovery while we got to stroll arm-in-arm through sun-drenched heirloom gardens? That is the holy grail of family travel. Proof that you never have to sacrifice style, spirit, or your sanity to learn something new together! 🌿👟

Little known fact about me: I have always had a wild dream of getting my pilot’s license. I actually flew a plane once, and that feeling of total freedom, altitude, and pure rebellion has stayed with me ever since.

So you can imagine my absolute delight when I found out that the ultimate queen of the skies—Amelia Earhart—used to call Medford, Massachusetts home in the 1920s! Before she was breaking world records and rewriting the history books, she was living right here on Brooks Street while working as a social worker. And today is her birthday! She would have been 128 years old today.

We took a little afternoon stroll to check out the plaque outside her historic house, and then headed into downtown Medford for a coffee and to take in this incredible mural on the side of Colleen’s. It is the absolute coolest tribute to a woman who refused to let anyone tell her how high she could fly.

Here is your reminder today to put on the aviators, book the flight, take the risk, and own your boldest, most unapologetic ambitions. 🥂

When the craving for true Parisian luxury hits but a transatlantic flight isn’t on the morning agenda, you improvise. I threw on my favorite oversized sunnies, packed the girls into the car, and bee-lined it to Michette Bakery in Somerville.

Tasting Table recently named them one of the 14 Best French Bakeries in the entire US, and let me tell you, darlings—the hype is incredibly real. The pain au chocolat is an absolute masterpiece of flaky, buttery perfection that practically transported me right back to strolling the Seine in 2016. It’s the ultimate luxe morning: world-class pastry, toddler sticky fingers, and zero apologies.

Where is your absolute favorite local spot to grab a pastry and pretend you’re on vacation? Drop it in the comments so I can plan my next escape! 👇🏼✈️

If you’re looking for an epic family outing that doesn’t require a trust fund or a meticulously color-coded itinerary, a trip to the Charlestown Navy Yard is it. The U.S.S. Constitution is the grand dame of the harbor, and she is always ready for her close-up.

Here is the ultimate cheat code for a high-low glam day out:

The Ship: It is completely FREE to step aboard and explore “Old Ironsides” (just remember adults need to bring an ID for security!).

The Visitor’s Center: Also free, and the perfect spot to cool down and get your bearings.

The Museum: If you want to dive deeper into the history without emptying your wallet, simply grab a pass from your local library (yes, the library, not the museum!) before you go. It waives the admission, making the whole day basically free.

Less money spent on tickets means more budget for post-adventure lattes and ice cream. That’s just smart girl math.

Have you taken the kids yet?
