From Day One I have shared my life’s mantra on my About page of this website. At first, I treated it as filler before I fully understood my brand. But as life became more complicated, I realized that I was actually using my mantra more and more. It became an essential part of me and my business. It’s become both my battle cry and a calming presence to assuage my anxiety. It empowers me. That’s why I’m going to share with you why you need a mantra and how you can discover it.
What is a Mantra?
The idea of a mantra originated in the Hindu and Buddhist religions. In both cultures, a mantra is a word or a sound repeated to aid concentration in meditation. If you’ve been to a yoga or meditation class, you’ve most likely repeated the “Om.” That is actually a mantra.
But in the western world the idea of a mantra has developed into a statement or slogan repeated frequently. For example, my mantra is actually a quote from one of my favorite movies.
Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

What is the Purpose of a Mantra?
There are several purposes to having a mantra. For me, my mantra’s purpose changes depending on my needs. While on days that I feel the need to relax, I look at those words as an excuse to “stop and look around.” On days that I’m feeling focused and determined, it’s a reminder to remember the details in my tasks and not work too fast which, given my ADHD, I am very prone to do. It’s also a reminder to pay attention to the small moments which have been particularly special now with my daughter as she reaches milestone after milestone every day.
Can a Mantra be Anything You Want?
Why not?! If it means something to you and inspires you – it’s a mantra.
Can a Mantra Evolve?
If life evolves, why can’t a mantra? When I was in acting school, my mantra was basically, “You are going to make it.” That mantra can apply to anyone for anything, but when I decided I no longer wanted to be an actor, I moved on. When I was in journalism school, my mantra was, “Get the Story.”
Why Do You Need a Mantra?
If you’re looking for inspiration, you need a mantra. If you’re looking to slow down, you need a mantra. If you’re starting a new job, you need a mantra. As humans, we have a need for words to assure us, to help us, to make us feel better – that’s where a mantra comes into play.
How Can You Find Your Mantra?
Think about what is most important to you. It could be your career, your family, travel, etc. Or you can focus on what you want most out of life or out of a season in your life. Here are a few examples of some simple, yet effective, mantras:
- “Remember who you are.”
- “It will get done.”
- “Your way in is your way out.”
- “Love the life you have.”
- “Nothing lasts forever.”
Or you can take a page out of my book. After all, the immortal words of Ferris Bueller applies to everyone.
